Khong Thai Kitchen (Albany, Auckland, New Zealand)
When the lunch crowd automatically heads for Chinese, sometimes the best decision is to go the other way. A simple Thai lunch made the middle of the workday far more interesting. A personal review of Khong Thai Kitchen in Albany featuring lunch specials, Pad Thai, fried chicken wings, friendly service, and good value.

Working in Albany means lunch decisions often become predictable. The area is packed with excellent Chinese restaurants, and before you know it, you find yourself rotating between dumplings, noodles, roast meats, and hot pots week after week. There is nothing wrong with that, but every now and then you crave something different.
That was exactly how I ended up at Khong Thai Kitchen. Tucked away on Mercari Way, it felt like a refreshing change from our usual lunch routine. Instead of another Chinese meal, my colleagues and I decided to give Thai food a go, and it turned out to be a welcome break from the familiar.
A Fresh Addition to Albany’s Dining Scene
The first thing I noticed was how new everything felt. The restaurant was spotless, with a clean, modern dining room that gave the impression it had only recently opened. The décor keeps things simple without feeling plain, creating a comfortable space that works equally well for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner.
Albany continues to grow as one of Auckland’s busiest commercial suburbs, so having another quality lunch option is always welcome. Parking around Mercari Way is generally straightforward, making it easy for office workers looking to maximise their lunch break without spending half of it searching for a parking space.
While the area remains dominated by Chinese eateries, Khong Thai Kitchen offers something different without trying too hard to stand out.
Lunch Specials That Offer Good Value
One of the biggest draws during lunchtime is the lunch menu. The pricing feels competitive, especially considering the current cost of dining out in Auckland.
On this visit I ordered the Pad Thai Beef for NZ$19.00, while we also shared an order of Fried Chicken Wings, six pieces for NZ$8.00.
Together they made for a satisfying lunch without feeling excessive on the wallet.

Pad Thai Beef
Pad Thai is one of those dishes that almost every Thai restaurant serves, making it a useful benchmark when trying somewhere new.
Khong Thai Kitchen’s version gets plenty right.
The flavours were well balanced, carrying the familiar combination of sweet, savoury, tangy, and nutty elements that define a good Pad Thai. The beef was tender, the portion size was generous, and the vegetables added freshness without overpowering the noodles.
The only criticism I had was the noodles themselves. They were slightly sticky, making them a little difficult to separate as I ate. It did not affect the flavour, but it did make the texture less enjoyable than it could have been. Had the noodles been just a little looser, this would have been an excellent plate of Pad Thai.
Fortunately, the seasoning more than made up for it, and I still enjoyed every bite.
Fried Chicken Wings
The Fried Chicken Wings were exactly what you hope for from a lunch side dish.
Golden, crispy, and well-seasoned, they had plenty of flavour without becoming overly greasy. At NZ$8.00 for six pieces, they also represented excellent value. They worked equally well as a shared appetiser or as an extra alongside the noodles if you arrive particularly hungry.
Sometimes the simplest dishes are the easiest to get wrong, but these were cooked well and disappeared quickly.

Friendly Service Makes a Difference
One thing that stood out throughout the meal was the service.
The staff greeted us warmly as we arrived and remained friendly throughout our visit. Orders were taken promptly, food arrived without unnecessary delays, and there was none of the rushed feeling that sometimes accompanies busy weekday lunch services.
It was efficient without feeling mechanical.
That relaxed atmosphere makes a difference, especially when you’re trying to squeeze a pleasant meal into a one-hour lunch break before returning to work.
Pricing That Fits the Market
Dining out has become noticeably more expensive over the last few years, so value matters more than ever.
Khong Thai Kitchen positions itself well within Albany’s lunchtime market. Most lunch dishes sit below the twenty-dollar mark, making them accessible for regular weekday visits rather than occasional treats.
Considering the generous portions, fresh presentation, and quality of ingredients, the pricing feels fair. It offers good value without trying to compete purely on being the cheapest.

Why People Keep Coming Back
After spending some time here, it is easy to understand why the restaurant has been gaining positive attention since opening. The combination of clean surroundings, approachable service, and dependable food creates a comfortable experience that encourages repeat visits.
Rather than chasing complicated fusion ideas or oversized menus, Khong Thai Kitchen focuses on familiar Thai favourites prepared consistently. That reliability is something diners clearly appreciate.
For office workers, families, and locals, it fills an important gap by providing quality Thai food in an area where other Asian cuisines tend to dominate.
Final Thoughts
Khong Thai Kitchen may not completely replace our usual Chinese lunch spots, but it certainly gives us another excellent option when we want something different.
The Pad Thai Beef delivered satisfying flavours despite the slightly sticky noodles, while the fried chicken wings proved to be one of the better value items on the menu. Add in the clean surroundings, friendly staff, and sensible pricing, and it becomes an easy recommendation for anyone working or living around Albany.
Sometimes all you need is a small change to break the lunchtime routine, and Khong Thai Kitchen does exactly that. It brings authentic Thai flavours into an area already filled with great dining options, giving North Shore diners another reason to look beyond their usual favourites. I know it will not be my last visit.
