Poojari’s Fish Land (Naganahalli, Karnataka, India)
When a highway dinner turns into a coastal deep dive. Big flavours, generous plates, and a spread that rewards eating slowly and sharing everything. Popular coastal restaurant in Naganahalli known for Mangalorean seafood, ghee roasts, fish curries, neer dosa, and classic rice dishes.

I honestly thought Copper Kitchen would be hard to beat on this trip, but Poojari’s Fish Land surprised me in more ways than one. The food alone could have carried the experience, yet the scale, setting, and sheer ambition of the place pushed it to another level. This was our dinner stop on the way home from a company outing in Kerala, a late one at that, and I expected a quick, functional meal. Instead, we walked into a full-blown coastal Karnataka showcase.
Even with our group of around sixty people, the restaurant barely blinked. The place is massive, with well over a hundred large tables and parking for more than a hundred cars, all set on a fully tiled ground. Despite the late hour, there were still plenty of diners, which immediately told me this was a dependable stop for travellers along Mysore Road.
A Place Built to Impress
The restaurant is non air-conditioned, but the open layout makes it comfortable and lively. Everything felt clean and well maintained, from the dining area to the restrooms, which left a strong first impression. Beyond the tables, the place doubles as a visual attraction. There is a display of the owner’s vintage car collection, rows of classic motorbikes, sculpted topiaries, and even two large, healthy cows housed within the premises. It sounds excessive on paper, but in person it adds character and makes the restaurant feel more like a destination than a simple eatery.

Starting Strong with the Dry Dishes
We went straight for Mangalorean classics, and the Chicken Ghee Roast set the tone. Served dry on a banana leaf, the chicken was coated in a thick, fiery red masala made from Byadgi chillies, garlic, and plenty of ghee. The aroma alone was intoxicating. Each bite delivered heat, richness, and a slight sweetness that balanced the spice. This is not a subtle dish, but it is deeply satisfying and clearly one of the kitchen’s signatures.

The Chicken Tandoori arrived next, glowing with that unmistakable charred crimson crust. Marinated in yogurt, Kashmiri chilli, and warm spices, the pieces were roasted until smoky at the edges yet tender within. A squeeze of lime brightened the richness, while the gentle heat lingered without overwhelming. It was a classic done with confidence, bold, aromatic, and impossible not to reach for again.

The Fish Ghee Roast was a knockout, boneless fillets cloaked in a deep red masala, rich with ghee, roasted spices, and a hint of tamarind. Cashew nuts added crunch, while curry leaves lent their earthy perfume. The fish held firm under the sauce, absorbing its intensity without losing its delicate texture. Served with raw onions and herbs on a gleaming metal plate, it was bold, indulgent, and unmistakably coastal, an unapologetic celebration of spice and depth.

Neer Dosa and the Art of Balance
Neer Dosa arrived stacked and glistening, ultra-thin and lacey. These delicate rice crepes are neutral by design, and that neutrality is their strength. They soaked up gravies without falling apart, acting as the perfect canvas for the richer dishes that followed.

The Chicken Curry, cooked gassi-style, had a coconut-based gravy with roasted spices and curry leaves. A glossy layer of oil floated on top, hinting at depth and careful cooking. It was robust without being aggressive, and paired beautifully with both neer dosa and rice.

Coastal Curries Done Right
The Fish Curry leaned towards the Kundapura style. Its bright orange-red colour gave away its coastal roots immediately. Tangy and chilli-forward, with kokum or tamarind cutting through the coconut richness, it had a sharpness that woke up the palate. This was a curry that demanded rice, and it delivered exactly what you would expect from a well-executed coastal fish preparation.

Jeera Rice played a supporting role but did so perfectly. Fragrant basmati rice tempered with cumin seeds and green chillies provided a mild, aromatic base that allowed the curries to shine without competing.

Then came the Fish Ghee Roast, which brought us back to intensity. Chunks of fish were tossed in the same ghee-heavy chilli paste as the chicken version, finished dry and unapologetically rich. It was spicy, indulgent, and unmistakably Mangalorean, the kind of dish that lingers in your memory long after the plate is cleared.
How the Meal Comes Together
What impressed me most was how the spread made sense as a whole. Two dry showstoppers in the chicken ghee roast and fish fry. Two gravies to anchor the meal. One neutral starch in the neer dosa and one aromatic rice dish to round things out. This is classic coastal Karnataka structure, bold proteins balanced by gentle starches, with no compromise on spice or flavour.

Service and Final Thoughts
Given the sheer size of the restaurant, consistency can be a challenge. Service was decent but uneven. During busy periods, staff appeared rushed and less attentive, although they were polite and responsive when approached. With better service flow during peak hours, the experience could be even stronger.
That said, the positives far outweigh the shortcomings. The seafood tasted fresh, the flavours stayed true to Mangalorean tradition, and the ambience and cleanliness added to the overall enjoyment.
Poojari’s Fish Land is a solid stop for anyone who loves coastal food, especially if you are travelling along Mysore Road. It is not just about eating here, it is about experiencing a full, unapologetic celebration of coastal Karnataka cuisine.

You photographed this appetizingly, the rich meats and sauces so well balanced with the rice and dosas the like of which I had never seen – it is hard to imagine them almost not falling apart – by no means the case it seems. With my love of well-cooked fish dishes – yours were truly enviable . . . reading with enjoyment, whilst hoping all has passed as planned . . .
