The Chill Lab (Albany, Auckland, New Zealand)
A personal review of The Chill Lab in Albany Auckland featuring Dubai Chocolate Gelato, Asian-inspired ice creams, pricing, and service experience. A dessert stop that turns into a decision dilemma. One scoop, one moment, and suddenly you understand why everyone keeps coming back.

When it comes to dessert spots in Auckland’s North Shore, there are places you visit once and forget, and then there are places that somehow stay in rotation whether you plan it or not. The Chill Lab falls firmly into the second category. Located in Albany’s Corinthian Drive area, it has built a steady reputation as a modern dessert lab that focuses on Asian-inspired gelato flavours, creative textures, and visually striking combinations that feel more experimental than traditional ice cream shops.
This was my first visit, although my daughter had already been here multiple times. She already had her favourites, but this time the focus was clear. We were here specifically for one thing, the Dubai Chocolate Gelato.
First Impressions of The Chill Lab
The space itself feels clean, modern, and designed for quick but enjoyable dessert stops. It is not a sit-down café in the traditional sense, but more of a grab, try, and share kind of place. The branding leans into the idea of a “lab”, and that reflects in both presentation and flavour combinations.
What immediately stood out from observing other customers was the variety of reactions. Some people came in already knowing exactly what they wanted, while others stood at the counter clearly overwhelmed by the menu. That is usually a good sign for any dessert place, it means people are curious, not just routine buyers.
Albany as a location also works in its favour. It is accessible, surrounded by retail and dining options, and has enough foot traffic to keep it consistently busy without feeling chaotic.

The Menu That Focuses on Asian-Inspired Gelato
The Chill Lab is not your standard gelato shop. Instead of sticking to the usual chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry lineup, it leans heavily into Asian dessert influences.
Flavours like black sesame, hojicha, jasmine tea rice, lychee rose sorbet, and similar combinations show up regularly. These are not just novelty flavours either. They are carefully built around familiar Asian dessert profiles, which makes them stand out in Auckland’s increasingly competitive dessert scene.
There is a clear attempt to balance familiarity with experimentation. Some flavours lean more traditional, while others push into fusion territory with layered textures and toppings.

The Highlight: Dubai Chocolate Gelato
The main reason for the visit was the Dubai Chocolate Gelato (NZ$14.80). This is easily one of the most talked-about items on their menu, and it also happens to be the most expensive single scoop I have personally bought.
It is not just a scoop of ice cream. It is a layered dessert experience.
The base is pink salt pistachio gelato, which already gives it a slightly savoury-sweet profile. On top of that, there is pistachio kataifi, adding a crisp, shredded pastry texture. Crushed pistachios bring additional crunch, while chewy chocolate mochi adds a completely different texture layer that shifts the experience from creamy to chewy in seconds.
On paper, it sounds like a lot. In reality, it works surprisingly well. Every bite changes depending on what you scoop up, which makes it feel more like a composed dessert than a simple gelato serving.
That said, the price is something you notice immediately. NZ$14.80 for one scoop is not casual dessert territory. It sits firmly in the “treat yourself” category. You are not buying this for value, you are buying it for experience and curiosity.
Service and Customer Experience
Service at The Chill Lab is efficient and structured. Orders move quickly, even during busy periods, and staff handle the constant flow of customers without much delay. There is a clear system in place for managing both takeaway and in-store orders.
One interesting part of the experience is their incentive system. Customers are often encouraged to share their visit on TikTok or Instagram, or leave a Google review, in exchange for small freebies such as an egg pudding cup. We received one of these during our visit.
The egg pudding was simple but enjoyable, soft, lightly sweet, and smooth in texture. It is clearly designed as a goodwill gesture rather than a core menu item, but it does add a nice touch to the overall experience.
It also explains why the shop maintains such strong online visibility. Encouraging customer-generated content naturally boosts exposure, which in turn fuels more foot traffic.

Pricing and Value
Pricing at The Chill Lab sits on the higher end for gelato in Auckland. Their standard scoops are good, but not exactly budget-friendly, and the specialty items, like the Dubai Chocolate Gelato, move into premium territory very quickly. When you compare it to a multi‑award‑winning shop like Little Lato, the difference becomes even more noticeable: Little Lato’s three‑scoop serving actually costs less than a single Dubai Chocolate Gelato, and for almost the same price as their tasting platter, you’d only need to add about NZ$1.20.
The value really depends on what you choose. A basic scoop delivers the kind of straightforward, fair return you’d expect from a casual dessert stop. But once you move into the more elaborate creations, the pricing shifts, those items are clearly built around novelty and complexity rather than sheer quality and quantity.
In the case of the Dubai Chocolate Gelato, you are paying for layered textures, imported-style inspiration, and presentation rather than just ice cream volume.
What People Seem to Like
From general customer sentiment and what can be observed in-store, a few consistent themes stand out. People appreciate the creativity of the flavours, especially the Asian-inspired options that are not commonly found elsewhere in Auckland. The presentation also gets attention, particularly for items that include multiple textures and toppings.
The social media-friendly nature of the desserts is another strong point. Many visitors clearly come in expecting to take photos, which fits naturally with how the desserts are styled.
Service consistency also plays a role in repeat visits. Despite being busy, orders are generally handled smoothly, and the overall experience feels organised.

Final Thoughts
The Chill Lab is not trying to be a traditional gelato shop. It sits somewhere between dessert café, experimental kitchen, and social media-friendly food stop. That identity is clear from the moment you walk in.
The Dubai Chocolate Gelato is the standout item, both in terms of flavour and price. It is rich, textural, and thoughtfully constructed, but also firmly positioned as a premium indulgence rather than an everyday treat.
For me, it was a good experience, slightly expensive, but memorable enough to understand why people keep coming back. The combination of Asian-inspired flavours, modern presentation, and clever customer engagement makes The Chill Lab more than just a dessert stop. It is a place built for curiosity, and that is probably its biggest strength.

Wow, Dubai Chocolate Gelato! I would LOVE one!
This sounds like an incredible shop, and I would definitely have to stop in. Those prices are quite steep, but as long as the quality matches, then it’s still ok. That Dubai Chocolate Gelato is something I’ve never come across here in the States!
I bet there will be some place that will offer them there, you guys have far more better options.
