Little ‘Lato (Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand)
Little ‘Lato in Ponsonby Auckland offers award-winning gelato with unique flavours, vegan options, and generous scoops. Award-winning gelato, endless flavour choices, and the kind of dessert stop that turns a casual evening stroll into a return visit with the whole family.

Some of the best food discoveries happen when you are not actively looking for them. That was exactly how we stumbled upon Little ‘Lato in Ponsonby.
After enjoying a nice dinner together, my wife and I were wandering around looking for somewhere to finish the evening with dessert. We were not after anything specific. Maybe cake, perhaps coffee, or whatever happened to catch our attention. Then we spotted a brightly lit shop glowing against the evening streetscape.
Ice cream for dessert it was.
What surprised us most was that despite having visited Ponsonby many times, we had never really noticed Little ‘Lato before. During the daytime it blends naturally into the surrounding streetscape, but at night the warm lighting and inviting interior make it impossible to miss.
One visit was all it took for us to become fans. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we later brought our daughter back so she could experience it herself.

More Than Just Another Ice Cream Shop
From the moment we walked through the door, it was obvious that Little ‘Lato was not your typical ice cream shop.
The interior is minimalist yet welcoming, with clean white walls, light timber finishes, greenery, and a bright modern aesthetic that immediately creates a sense of freshness. Everything looked immaculate. The shop was spotless, so much so that we initially assumed it was a newly opened business.
The space itself is relatively compact, but every corner feels thoughtfully designed. The gelato display immediately becomes the centrepiece, stretching across the store like a colourful gallery of frozen desserts.
Behind the counter sits what can only be described as a gelato vault. Rows upon rows of vibrant gelato and sorbet flavours are displayed in sleek Italian-style cabinets, each one looking more tempting than the last.

The Awards Speak for Themselves
One thing that quickly caught our attention was the number of award stickers attached to many of the flavour cards.
Gold medals.
Silver medals.
Champion awards.
Supreme Champion awards.
Everywhere you looked there seemed to be another highly decorated flavour staring back at you.
Little ‘Lato has earned more than 120 awards, including 26 gold medals and multiple Supreme Champion titles, making it one of New Zealand’s most awarded boutique gelato producers.
Normally, awards help narrow down your choices.
Here, they made the decision even harder.
When almost every flavour has won something, how do you choose?

Understanding What Makes Gelato Different
One thing I appreciated was the information displayed inside the shop explaining the difference between gelato and traditional ice cream.
According to Little ‘Lato, gelato contains less air, less fat, and is served at a warmer temperature than conventional ice cream. The result is a denser texture and more intense flavour.
Whether you are a gelato enthusiast or someone who simply enjoys a frozen dessert now and then, the difference becomes obvious after the first spoonful.
The texture is incredibly smooth and creamy. The flavours feel concentrated. Nothing tastes diluted or muted. Every scoop delivers exactly what it promises.

A Display Cabinet Full of Temptation
The flavour selection is staggering.
On our visit there were dozens of choices ranging from traditional Italian-inspired classics through to creative modern combinations and vegan-friendly creations.
What impressed me most was the variety available for different dietary requirements. More than half of the range was vegan-friendly, which is remarkable considering many gelato shops offer only a handful of dairy-free options.
Walking along the display cabinet felt like browsing a dessert menu designed by someone with unlimited imagination.
Classic flavours sat alongside unusual combinations, many of which sounded intriguing enough to order purely out of curiosity.

What We Tried
Between my wife, my daughter and myself, we managed to sample quite a few flavours across multiple visits.
The Hazelnut & Dark Chocolate was rich, indulgent and deeply satisfying. The roasted hazelnut flavour came through beautifully while the dark chocolate added intensity without becoming overly sweet.
The Pistachio was excellent and exactly what a proper pistachio gelato should be. Nutty, creamy and full of natural pistachio flavour rather than relying on artificial colouring or flavouring.

Speculoos was one of the most decorated flavours in the cabinet and it quickly became one of our favourites. Packed with warm caramelised biscuit notes, it delivered everything fans of Biscoff-style desserts could hope for.
The Peanut Butter and Dulce de Leche combined sweet and salty elements perfectly. Rich peanut flavour balanced beautifully against the smooth caramel notes.
Mango Lassi, another heavily awarded flavour, was wonderfully refreshing. The yoghurt tang provided balance while the mango remained vibrant and tropical.
We also sampled Banoffee, which captured all the flavours of the classic dessert, and Oat Milk Latte, a surprisingly rich vegan option that delivered genuine coffee flavour.
What impressed me most was that the vegan flavours never felt like compromises. Many were every bit as creamy and satisfying as their dairy-based counterparts.

Generous Scoops and Friendly Service
The staff deserve plenty of credit as well.
They were patient, knowledgeable and more than happy to provide samples before we committed to our selections. With so many flavours available, that opportunity to taste before ordering is genuinely appreciated.
The scoops themselves were generous, making the pricing feel very reasonable given the quality and craftsmanship involved.
One scoop is enough for a light dessert.
Two scoops is where the fun begins.
Three scoops might require a serious commitment.

Worth Returning For
The true sign of a great dessert shop is whether you immediately start thinking about your next visit before you’ve even finished your current one.
That happened here.
There are still dozens of flavours we have not tried, and each visit seems to bring new seasonal creations and award-winning combinations to discover.
Whether you are a dedicated gelato enthusiast, someone searching for a quality dessert after dinner, or simply looking for one of Auckland’s best sweet treats, Little ‘Lato delivers an experience that lives up to its impressive reputation.

Final Thoughts
Little ‘Lato is much more than an ice cream shop. It is a showcase of creativity, craftsmanship and flavour.
The beautifully presented store, extensive range of award-winning gelato, excellent vegan options and friendly service all contribute to an experience that feels special from start to finish.
What began as a spontaneous dessert stop after dinner turned into a place we returned to with the whole family. That alone probably says everything you need to know.
If you find yourself in Ponsonby with room for dessert, do yourself a favour and stop by Little ‘Lato.
Just be prepared for one very difficult decision: choosing only a few flavours from a cabinet full of winners.

. . . and now you have made me want to look for my genie to get me across the Ditch and you are two hours ahead and I’ll just have to look at your photos . . . peanut butter or mango methinks . . . :) ?
Why not both
Even from a photo, I can tell that texture is absolutely on point. It’s like the platonic ideal of gelato. I just had breakfast and I would totally mow down a cone of this right now.
It’s always fun to go out for ice cream…or gelato in this case! And those flavors. I’d have such a hard time picking which one to get. I do think speculoos would win out for me though!
