As I’ve mentioned before, Wednesdays are a little different for our team.
Instead of heading into the city office, everyone is free to choose whichever office location suits them best. For those of us living on the North Shore or in West Auckland, the Albany office makes perfect sense. It saves a considerable amount of commuting time and, more importantly, gives us access to a fantastic range of Asian eateries that simply aren’t available elsewhere.
The challenge these days is finding somewhere new.
After years of rotating through the area’s restaurants, we’ve worked our way through most of the popular spots. Every now and then, however, a new discovery appears.
This time it was Hui’s Kitchen, the restaurant that has taken over the space previously occupied by Cinta, which sadly closed its doors.
After hearing a few positive comments, we decided to give it a try.
It turned out to be one of the best-value lunches we’ve had in a very long time.
Walking into Hui’s Kitchen, you’ll immediately notice that this isn’t a place trying to impress you with interior design. There are no elaborate decorations, trendy lighting fixtures or carefully curated Instagram corners. In fact, the first thing that came to mind was a school cafeteria and I mean that as a compliment. The focus here is clearly on feeding people rather than creating a fashionable dining environment. The dining room is simple, functional and comfortable. Everything feels practical and unpretentious.
The food is displayed cafeteria-style behind a glass counter, allowing customers to see exactly what’s available before making their selections.
It is refreshingly honest. No fancy menu photography. No marketing gimmicks. Just trays of freshly prepared food waiting to be served.
The sign outside initially grabbed our attention because the pricing almost seemed too good to be true.
For NZ$12.90, diners receive rice, soup and access to a selection of meat and vegetable dishes.
At first, we assumed it would operate like many food court outlets where staff fill your plate once and that’s the end of it.
We were wrong.
Very wrong.
After serving our first plates, the owner explained that we could return for additional servings if we wanted more. Unlimited refills for NZ$12.90, in 2026, that’s almost unheard of.
If you’re trying to stretch your lunch budget even further, there’s also a NZ$9.00 option that includes one meat dish, one vegetable dish, rice and soup. Even that feels like excellent value in today’s market.
One thing worth understanding before you visit is that Hui’s Kitchen isn’t trying to be a fine dining destination.
This is genuine everyday Chinese comfort food. The sort of food many people grew up eating at home.
The dishes available during our visit included braised pork belly with beans, tomato and egg, stir-fried vegetables, fried chicken pieces, cauliflower, shredded potatoes and several other rotating options.
Nothing looked overly complicated. Nothing was designed to be flashy. Instead, the food focused on familiar flavours and comforting textures.
The braised pork belly was particularly enjoyable. The meat was tender with a rich savoury sweetness that paired perfectly with rice.
The tomato and egg dish was another standout. Simple, comforting and incredibly satisfying, it reminded me why this humble Chinese classic remains so popular.
The stir-fried greens provided freshness and balance, while the fried chicken added a welcome contrast in texture.
Best of all, knowing that another serving was available made the meal feel even more generous.
One aspect that stood out immediately was the friendliness of the owner.
From the moment we arrived, she greeted customers warmly and happily explained how the lunch system worked.
There was none of the rushed feeling often associated with budget dining establishments.
Instead, she genuinely seemed pleased that people had chosen to eat there.
You could see her interacting with regular customers as if they were old friends.
That kind of hospitality cannot be manufactured.
It comes naturally from people who genuinely enjoy serving others.
Restaurants often spend significant amounts of money trying to create memorable customer experiences. Hui’s Kitchen achieves it through simple warmth and authenticity.
While Hui’s Kitchen does offer noodles and several other menu items, it was obvious what most customers had come for.
Almost every table featured the lunch rice set.
Watching diners return to the counter for additional servings confirmed that the value proposition is the restaurant’s biggest drawcard.
Where else can you find a lunch for NZ$12.90 that includes rice, soup and unlimited servings of multiple dishes?
Even fast-food meals now frequently cost more than that.
For office workers, students, tradespeople or anyone looking for an affordable lunch, it’s difficult to think of many competitors offering comparable value.
Hui’s Kitchen isn’t trying to be trendy. It isn’t trying to reinvent Chinese cuisine. It isn’t aiming for fine dining awards. What it does offer is something arguably far more useful. Affordable, comforting home-style Chinese food served by genuinely friendly people.
The portions are generous, the flavours are familiar and satisfying, and the prices feel almost unbelievable in the current economic climate.
For NZ$12.90 per person, including rice, soup and unlimited servings of various meat and vegetable dishes, it represents some of the best lunch value I’ve encountered anywhere in Auckland.
Sometimes the best restaurants aren’t the ones with the most impressive interiors or the longest waiting lists.
Sometimes they’re simply the places that feed people well, treat customers kindly and charge a fair price.
Hui’s Kitchen does exactly that.
