Some restaurants become part of your family story. One last New York Pizza at Sam’s in Zürich felt less like dinner and more like revisiting a childhood memory.  SAM’S Pizza Land in Zürich serves American-style pizza, kebab pizza, salads, and comfort food in a retro diner setting.

I have a feeling this was probably the last time we will eat at SAM’S Pizza Land in Zürich.

Not because we stopped liking it. Quite the opposite actually. But sometimes restaurants become tied to certain chapters in your life, and when that chapter quietly closes, you realise you may never return the same way again.

For our family, Zürich was never just another European destination. It always carried something personal. We used to visit every couple of years because of family, and somewhere along the way, SAM’S Pizza Land became woven into that tradition. Before flying back home to New Zealand, we decided to eat there one more time, almost like properly closing a small but meaningful chapter of our lives.

As soon as I sat down, memories started flooding back. I realised how many times I had actually eaten at Sam’s over the years. Back when I was younger, this was one of my mum’s favourite places whenever we visited Zürich. The branch we used to go to was the old Dreikönigstrasse location, which sadly no longer exists. During this trip, we discovered the Schweizergasse branch instead, and somehow it still carried that same familiar spirit.

Why We Always Chose Sam’s Pizza

People might wonder why, in a city surrounded by excellent European food and authentic Italian restaurants, we kept returning to an American-style pizza place.

The answer is simple.

We are Filipino.

Growing up in the Philippines, many of us were introduced to pizza through places like Pizza Hut and Shakey’s. Thick crusts, stretchy cheese, generous toppings, and that unmistakable comfort-food appeal shaped our idea of pizza growing up. Of course we love proper Italian pizza too, especially after travelling around Europe, but American-style pizza carries a completely different kind of nostalgia.

It reminds you of birthdays, shopping mall dinners, family weekends, and childhood celebrations.

So when my mum first brought me to Sam’s years ago, it instantly clicked. Somehow in the middle of Switzerland, we found something that reminded us of home.

A Retro Diner Atmosphere That Never Changes

Walking into SAM’S Pizza Land still feels wonderfully old-school.

The restaurant embraces a retro American diner aesthetic with bright red interiors, vintage signage, brass instruments hanging from the ceiling, and a playful atmosphere that feels comfortably unpretentious. It does not try too hard to be trendy or modern. Instead, it leans fully into that relaxed comfort-food identity.

That casual energy is part of the charm.

The location itself is also excellent, tucked within Zürich’s old town area near the busy shopping streets. During our visit, the restaurant had a healthy mix of locals, families, tourists, and returning regulars. The atmosphere felt lively without becoming overwhelming.

It is the sort of place where nobody rushes you out after eating.

The Legendary New York Pizza

Of course, tradition meant we had to order the New York Pizza again.

And honestly, the moment it arrived, I immediately remembered why we kept coming back to it over the years.

Loaded generously with Parma ham, roasted peppers, garlic, mozzarella, and herbs, this pizza fully embraces excess in the best possible way. This is not delicate minimalist pizza where every ingredient is carefully restrained. This is unapologetic comfort food.

The crust sits somewhere between American and European styles, thicker than a traditional Italian pizza but still crisp enough around the edges to avoid feeling too heavy. Every slice delivered that dramatic cheese stretch that instantly brings back childhood pizza memories.

The roasted peppers added sweetness while the salty Parma ham balanced everything beautifully.

Most importantly, it still tasted exactly how I remembered it.

Kebab Pizza, Lemonade, and Swiss Comfort Food Culture

We also ordered one of their combo offers featuring a Kebab Pizza paired with homemade lemonade.

This combination honestly captures modern European fast-casual food culture perfectly.

The kebab pizza was loaded with flavour from the kebab meat, mozzarella, yoghurt sauce, and cocktail sauce. Italians would probably consider this pizza sacrilegious, but somehow it works brilliantly. Rich, messy, savoury, and deeply satisfying.

The homemade lemonade turned out surprisingly refreshing too. Served with fresh citrus slices, mint, and plenty of ice, it cut beautifully through the richness of the pizzas.

We also had iced tea, which arrived nicely presented with orange slices and mint leaves, giving the meal a refreshing balance.

A Surprisingly Good Caprese Salad

To lighten things slightly, we ordered the Caprese Salad.

Simple dishes only work when the ingredients are good, and thankfully this one delivered. Thick slices of ripe tomato paired with creamy mozzarella, basil, olive oil, and balsamic glaze created a fresh contrast to the heavier pizzas.

The mozzarella had that soft milky texture you hope for, while the tomatoes carried enough sweetness to make the whole dish feel balanced and refreshing.

Friendly Service and Relaxed Dining

One thing I have always appreciated about SAM’S Pizza Land is how approachable it feels despite being located in central Zürich.

Service during our visit was warm, relaxed, and efficient. Staff were friendly without becoming intrusive and handled the growing lunch crowd smoothly as the restaurant became busier throughout the afternoon.

Looking through reviews afterwards, many people seem to appreciate the same things: generous portions, dependable comfort food, and an atmosphere that makes you feel welcome.

Pricing in Switzerland will always surprise visitors, especially if you are coming from Asia or New Zealand. But by Zürich standards, SAM’S Pizza Land actually feels relatively reasonable considering the location and portion sizes. The combo meals especially offer decent value for central Zürich dining.

More Than Just Pizza

But honestly, this meal was never really about value.  It was about memory.

There was something strangely emotional about sitting there eating that same New York Pizza again after all these years, knowing this may genuinely be the last time. Not because we dislike the place, but because life changes quietly. People move. Traditions slowly disappear without you noticing until one day you realise certain routines may never happen again.

As we stepped back outside into the Zürich streets after finishing our final slices, I appreciated SAM’S Pizza Land more than ever.

Not because it serves the best pizza in Europe.

But because it became part of our family story.

And sometimes that matters far more than authenticity.
