Popeyes (San Diego, California, United States)

Savour the signature crunch of Popeyes chicken in San Diego, paired with buttery biscuits and Cajun fries. A fast-food experience worth the hype! ✨ Late-night cravings? Solved! Popeyes in San Diego serves up the crispiest chicken, buttery biscuits, and Cajun fries that’ll make your taste buds dance! #PopeyesLove #SanDiegoEats

It’s funny how a single fast-food chain can evoke such contrasting experiences across countries. When Popeyes opened in New Zealand, it caused a frenzy, but my experience there was a letdown. That memory stayed with me, so I made it a mission to try Popeyes in its home turf during my California trip. Spoiler alert: it was absolutely worth it.

A Late-Night Stop in San Diego

While staying near Midway Drive in San Diego, we spotted a Popeyes close to our hotel. On a whim, we decided to give it a try, even though we had already eaten dinner. It was nearly 10 PM, so the crowds had thinned, making parking a breeze. As soon as we walked in, the aroma of freshly fried chicken filled the air and reignited our appetites.

What We Ordered

We couldn’t resist the 8-Piece Chicken Family Meal Classic, which came with:

  • 8 pieces of their signature fried chicken.
  • One large side (we chose Cajun fries).
  • Four warm buttermilk biscuits.

Even though it was meant to be a snack, we ended up devouring everything.

The Chicken: A Love at First Bite

Popeyes’ chicken in the U.S. is on another level. Each piece was coated in a perfectly seasoned batter, fried to golden brown perfection. The crunch was incredibly satisfying, and the chicken inside remained moist, tender, and flavourful. The seasoning was bold and complex, showcasing the Southern roots Popeyes is known for. Compared to the darker, dry chicken we had in New Zealand, this was a revelation.

Buttermilk Biscuits: Heaven in a Bite

Popeyes’ buttermilk biscuits were a showstopper. Light and fluffy on the inside, with a slightly crispy and flaky exterior, each bite delivered a buttery richness with a touch of tang from the buttermilk. There’s a subtle sweetness that made them perfect on their own or paired with honey or jam. They were so good we could’ve easily eaten them as a standalone snack.

Cajun Fries: Flavourful but Not Perfect

The Cajun fries were generously seasoned with a bold mix of spices, adding a zesty kick. While the flavour was spot-on, some parts weren’t as crispy as advertised. That said, the softness inside complemented the spice-laden exterior nicely. The portion size was massive—too much for us to finish after everything else.

Why Popeyes U.S. Stands Out

This meal was a reminder of why Popeyes has such a loyal following in the U.S. The chicken is miles ahead of what we get in New Zealand—crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. While I can’t pit Popeyes directly against Jollibee or KFC (their flavour profiles are too different), each holds its own charm. Popeyes shines with its signature crunch and Southern spice, while Jollibee leans into its sweet-savory Pinoy flavours. KFC, especially in New Zealand, excels in juicy, umami-packed pieces with a softer breading.

Final Thoughts

Our impromptu visit to Popeyes in San Diego turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of the trip. From the crispy chicken to the buttery biscuits, everything was a testament to Popeyes’ reputation as a fast-food giant. It left me wondering when the New Zealand branch will finally catch up to this standard. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of that golden-brown crunch and those heavenly biscuits.

  1. I agree that Popeye’s biscuits are amazing! We try not to eat fast food very often, but they do make a good fried chicken there. Glad you enjoyed it!

It’s so interesting to get your take on Popeye’s! I’ve never been personally, but do hear rave reviews from those who go. I didn’t realize it might be different overseas.
