Nothing quite excites me on a family holiday like spotting a Jollibee, and I know that feeling is shared by many Filipinos living overseas. For us, Jollibee isn’t just fast food—it’s comfort, nostalgia, and a taste of home wrapped up in crispy Chickenjoy skin. Living in Auckland, the nearest Jollibee is 7,027 km away in Hawaii, and the last time I indulged in Jollibee was back in 2019 during a trip to Hong Kong. So, naturally, when we planned our trip to the US, I made it a priority to stop by and satisfy my craving. Irvine’s Jollibee location, conveniently located inside Seafood City (another Filipino haven), was calling my name!

Why Filipinos Love Jollibee

What’s the deal with Filipinos and Jollibee? For many, this fast-food chain represents more than just a meal—it’s a piece of the Philippines abroad. The familiar taste of Chickenjoy, Jolly Spaghetti, and Palabok Fiesta brings back memories of family gatherings and celebrations. Jollibee’s unique menu combines American fast food with Filipino flair. For instance, their sweet spaghetti with hot dog slices may confuse some non-Filipinos, but for us, it’s pure childhood joy on a plate.

Growing up, weekends meant mom treating me to a plate of Palabok, a tradition I still cherish today. That’s why, no matter where I am in the world, the sight of that smiling bee brings back fond memories. Jollibee’s global presence, with over 1,500 stores worldwide, helps Filipinos abroad feel connected to their roots. The US alone has 72 Jollibee branches, with California boasting 31 of them. It’s no wonder, considering the large Filipino community in the state.

Our Jollibee Irvine Experience

This was our first time visiting the Jollibee in Irvine, but we’d been to other locations on previous trips. One thing we noticed right away was the Chickenjoy Bucket Meals—something new for us. We went all-in on the 6-piece Chickenjoy Bucket, but instead of the usual spaghetti, we asked if we could swap it for Palabok Fiesta, which they happily obliged. Our combo also came with three pies, and we opted for two ube pies and one peach mango pie. The entire meal set us back just $34.99—not bad for a feast that hit all the right spots.

As expected, the Chickenjoy didn’t disappoint. The breading may be thinner compared to other fried chicken, but it’s perfectly crispy. The chicken itself was juicy and tender, with every bite releasing a burst of flavourful juice. And that gravy—absolutely phenomenal! It’s thick, rich, and pairs perfectly with the chicken. The Palabok Fiesta was as delicious as I remembered, easily one of my top three favourite dishes of all time. The shrimp-infused sauce over thin rice noodles, topped with crispy pork and chicharon, was just the nostalgic comfort food I was hoping for.

Now, let’s talk pies. The Ube Pie was a pleasant surprise—creamy, earthy, and just the right amount of sweetness. It was my first time trying it, and it’s something I’d definitely get again. And of course, the Peach Mango Pie was as iconic as ever, with its golden, crispy crust and perfectly sweet and tangy filling. It’s hard to beat.

Why Jollibee Hits Different

What makes Jollibee stand out, especially its fried chicken, is the attention to detail. The chicken is always cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. And their gravy? It blows KFC’s out of the water. Pouring that over a plate of steamed rice (though we didn’t have any this time) would have been pure bliss—the ultimate Filipino comfort combo.

In terms of service, the Irvine location was great. The crew was fast, friendly, and efficient. The place was clean and surprisingly quiet, making it a relaxing spot to enjoy our meal. The friendly service reminded me of how Jollibee employees back home go out of their way to make every visit feel special.

For any Filipino abroad, especially those who’ve been away from home for a long time, Jollibee is more than just a fast-food joint—it’s a slice of home. From the crispy Chickenjoy to the savory Palabok, it’s the kind of meal that brings you back to family gatherings, childhood weekends, and that familiar taste of the Philippines.
