Nhà Hàng Madame Thư (Ninh Bình, Vietnam)
Elegant Vietnamese restaurant in Ninh Bình serving comforting home-style dishes, fresh local ingredients, and warm hospitality. Sometimes the best meal isn’t the fanciest, it’s the one that feels like home. After a long day exploring Ninh Bình, we found comfort in simple, beautifully cooked dishes that reminded us why Vietnamese cuisine is so special. #NhaHangMadameThu #NinhBinh #VietnamFood

After several days of exploring Ninh Bình’s incredible landscapes, climbing viewpoints, walking through ancient temples, and spending hours in the heat and humidity, we were completely exhausted. It had been one of those days where every step was worth it, but by dinner time all we wanted was somewhere quiet, comfortable, and relaxing. Since it was also our final evening in Ninh Bình, we wanted our last meal to be memorable.
That’s how we found Nhà Hàng Madame Thư.
From the moment we walked through the beautifully lit entrance, the restaurant felt different. The elegant yellow colonial-style building, glowing warmly against the night sky, immediately created a welcoming atmosphere. While it certainly looked more upmarket than many of the restaurants we had visited during our stay, it never felt intimidating. Instead, it felt warm, inviting and surprisingly peaceful after the bustling streets outside.
A Beautiful Restaurant with a Relaxing Atmosphere
The restaurant is beautifully designed, combining classic Vietnamese architecture with modern comfort. The landscaped gardens, lanterns and soft lighting create a calm environment that immediately helps you unwind after a busy day.
Inside, the dining room is spacious, clean, and tastefully decorated. Unlike some busy tourist restaurants where tables are packed tightly together, Madame Thư gives diners room to relax and enjoy their meal without feeling rushed.
After the heat and noise of the day, simply sitting down here with an ice-cold Bia Saigon was already enough to make us feel refreshed.
Home Style Cooking That Felt Comfortingly Familiar
As we looked through the menu, we noticed it featured many traditional Vietnamese dishes rather than trendy modern creations. That suited us perfectly because by this stage of the trip we were craving something comforting rather than adventurous.
What surprised us most was how familiar everything felt. Although the flavours were unmistakably Vietnamese, many of the dishes reminded us of home-cooked meals we would happily enjoy with family. They weren’t identical to Filipino food, yet there was something comforting about the balance of flavours, the simplicity of the cooking and the generous portions.
Sometimes the best restaurants aren’t the ones trying to impress with complicated techniques. They’re the ones that make you feel like you’re sitting at someone’s dining table.

A Comforting Bowl of Sour Clam Soup
One of the highlights of dinner was the sour clam soup.
Served piping hot with tomatoes, pineapple, bean sprouts and fresh herbs, the broth was light, refreshing and packed with flavour. The natural sweetness of the pineapple balanced the gentle sourness beautifully, while the clams added a delicate seafood flavour throughout the soup.
As soon as I tasted it, I couldn’t help but think of sinigang back home. It wasn’t the same dish, but it delivered that same comforting feeling of a warm, slightly sour soup that’s perfect after a tiring day. It was exactly the kind of meal our bodies were craving after hours spent walking under the Vietnamese sun.

Morning Glory Done Perfectly
The morning glory with garlic was another standout.
Simple dishes often reveal the skill of a kitchen, and this one was cooked perfectly. The vegetables remained vibrant green with just enough bite while the generous amount of garlic infused every mouthful without overpowering the natural flavour of the greens.
Most importantly, it arrived properly hot. There’s something incredibly satisfying about fresh vegetables served straight from the wok, and this dish delivered exactly that. It complemented the richer dishes beautifully and added freshness to the meal.

Roast Pork with a Vietnamese Twist
We also ordered the restaurant’s roast pork, expecting something similar to what we’re familiar with.
Instead, what arrived was completely different.
Rather than crispy crackling and slow-roasted slices, this version consisted of bite-sized pieces of pork stir-fried until lightly caramelised with spring onions and fresh chillies. The pork was tender with crisp edges, carrying smoky wok flavours and just enough chilli to give the dish a gentle kick without becoming overly spicy.
Although it wasn’t the roast pork we had imagined, it turned out to be a delicious surprise. It perfectly demonstrated how familiar ingredients can be transformed into something uniquely Vietnamese while still feeling wonderfully comforting.

Great Food, Fair Prices
One thing we appreciated throughout our time in Vietnam was the excellent value for money, and Madame Thư was no exception.
Although the restaurant offers premium local specialties including goat, freshwater fish, duck and eel dishes, the prices remain reasonable considering the elegant surroundings and quality of the food.
Our meal of roast pork, morning glory, sour clam soup, steamed rice, drinks and beer provided a satisfying dinner without feeling overly expensive. Combined with attentive service and comfortable surroundings, it represented excellent value for a restaurant of this standard.

A Wonderful Farewell to Ninh Bình
Looking back, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better final dinner in Ninh Bình.
After a hectic day filled with sightseeing and humid weather, this meal gave us exactly what we needed. The comforting food, peaceful atmosphere and welcoming service made us feel less like travellers and more like guests being served a home-cooked dinner.
While many visitors come to Ninh Bình searching for goat dishes or local specialties, I think restaurants like Madame Thư deserve just as much attention. They showcase Vietnamese cooking that is simple, honest, and incredibly satisfying.
As we finished our final bowl of soup and enjoyed the last few bites of pork with steamed rice, it felt like the perfect way to say goodbye to one of Vietnam’s most beautiful destinations.
