Lẩu Gà Lá É – Dê Núi Tràng An (Ninh Bình, Vietnam)

Enjoy riverside BBQ in Ninh Bình with quality grilled meats, lively atmosphere, generous BBQ combos, and excellent value for money.  Some of the best meals are the ones you never planned. A riverside BBQ, smoky grilled meats, cold local beer, and a buzzing atmosphere turned an ordinary evening into one of our favourite dinners in Vietnam. #LauGaLaEDeNuiTrangAn #NinhBinh #VietnamFood #BBQ

Some of the best restaurant discoveries happen completely by accident, and this was exactly one of those moments. After spending the day exploring Ninh Bình, we were simply looking for somewhere to have dinner. As we wandered around the lively streets near the river, we noticed a restaurant packed with locals enjoying grilled meat, chatting over drinks, and filling the evening air with the unmistakable aroma of barbecue.

That restaurant was Lẩu Gà Lá É – Dê Núi Tràng An, and while the name highlights its famous goat dishes and hotpots, it was the BBQ that immediately caught our attention. We had no expectations when we walked in. We were simply hungry and wanted a relaxed dinner before calling it a night. Looking back, it became one of the biggest surprises of our Vietnam trip.

A Lively Riverside Atmosphere

One of the first things that impressed us was the location. Sitting right beside the river, the restaurant enjoys beautiful evening views as the lights from surrounding buildings shimmer across the water. Strings of warm fairy lights hung above the outdoor dining area, creating an inviting atmosphere that became even more magical after sunset.

The restaurant was busy with families, groups of friends and couples enjoying dinner together. Despite the large number of diners, the staff remained organised and efficient, quickly seating guests and keeping the tables supplied with fresh food. The energy of the place was infectious, and it immediately felt like somewhere locals genuinely enjoy rather than just another tourist stop.

Choosing the 500,000 VND BBQ Combo

The menu offered several BBQ combinations priced at 300,000 VND, 500,000 VND and 800,000 VND, with different selections of premium meats. After looking through the options, we settled on the 500,000 VND mixed meat combo, which seemed to provide the best balance between variety and value.

When the platter arrived, it looked incredibly generous. Thick slices of beautifully marbled beef sat alongside pork belly, pork shoulder, pork neck, and other cuts, all lightly marinated and ready for the grill. Fresh lettuce, cucumber, kimchi, dipping sauces, and butter completed the meal, giving us everything needed for a proper Vietnamese-style barbecue experience.

Considering the quality and quantity of the meat, the price felt remarkably reasonable.

Grilling Everything Ourselves

Part of the fun came from cooking everything ourselves right at the table. The foil-covered grill slowly heated until the butter melted across the surface, creating a rich aroma before the first slices of meat even touched the hot plate.

Within seconds, the meat began to sizzle. Fat rendered slowly from the pork belly while the beef developed a beautiful caramelised crust. Turning each piece at just the right moment became part of the experience, and before long we had a table filled with perfectly grilled meat ready to wrap in fresh lettuce with a little kimchi and dipping sauce.

It is one of those meals where the cooking becomes just as enjoyable as the eating. Conversations naturally continue while everyone waits for the next batch to finish grilling.

Quality That Genuinely Surprised Us

If there was one thing we underestimated, it was the quality of the meat.

Restaurants located near tourist areas can sometimes rely more on convenience than quality, so we weren’t expecting anything particularly memorable. Instead, every cut exceeded our expectations.

The beef was tender with excellent marbling, staying juicy throughout cooking. The pork belly crisped beautifully while remaining moist inside, and the other pork cuts were equally tender with just enough seasoning to enhance the natural flavour without overpowering it.

Nothing tasted frozen or heavily processed. Everything felt fresh, carefully prepared, and surprisingly premium considering the price.

To accompany the meal, I ordered a cold can of Bia Saigon Lager, Vietnam’s iconic local beer. Crisp, refreshing and light, it paired perfectly with the smoky grilled meat, making it difficult to imagine a better combination on a warm Ninh Bình evening.

More Than Just BBQ

Although we focused on the barbecue, the restaurant also specialises in mountain goat dishes, hotpots, and a wide selection of Vietnamese favourites. The menu includes grilled goat, steamed goat, stir-fried goat, goat noodle soup and several family-style dishes that showcase one of Ninh Bình’s most famous local ingredients.

This means even larger groups with different tastes will find plenty to enjoy, making it an excellent choice whether you are specifically seeking local goat specialities or simply craving a relaxed barbecue dinner.

Excellent Value for Money

One of the biggest takeaways from this meal was just how much value it offered.

For 500,000 VND, we received a generous selection of quality meats, fresh vegetables, accompaniments, and an enjoyable interactive dining experience. It comfortably fed the three of us, and we never felt short on food.

When you combine that with the riverside location, lively atmosphere, and surprisingly high-quality ingredients, it becomes one of the better dining values we found during our stay in Ninh Bình.

Final Thoughts

Lẩu Gà Lá É – Dê Núi Tràng An turned out to be one of those unexpected highlights that every trip seems to produce. We walked in without any real expectations, attracted mainly by the busy atmosphere and tempting aroma drifting from the grills. We walked out genuinely impressed.

The riverside setting creates a wonderful backdrop for dinner, the staff handle the crowds efficiently, and the quality of the barbecue exceeded anything we anticipated. Add a cold Bia Saigon, a lively local atmosphere and excellent value for money, and you have all the ingredients for a memorable evening.

If you are spending a few nights in Ninh Bình and want something different from the usual noodle soups and local specialities, I would happily recommend giving their BBQ a try. It certainly became one of the most enjoyable dinners of our Vietnam adventure.
