El Tiki Taco (Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh, Vietnam)

Authentic Mexican restaurant in Hoa Lu Ancient Town serving pork carnitas tacos, chilli beef nachos, chicken quesadillas, and cold beers.  After conquering Mua Cave, we rewarded ourselves with cold beers, Mexican comfort food and a few competitive games of foosball and darts. It turned out to be one of the most relaxing evenings of our Vietnam trip. #ElTikiTaco #NinhBinh #MexicoInVietnam

Climbing Mua Cave was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our Ninh Bình trip, but it was also one of the most physically demanding. Nearly 500 stone steps under the scorching Vietnamese sun, combined with intense humidity, left us completely exhausted. Reaching the summit was rewarding, but by the time we made it back down, all we could think about was finding somewhere to sit, cool down and enjoy a well-earned meal.

Instead of heading back to our hotel, we returned to the lively Hoa Lư Ancient Town. While wandering around the beautifully illuminated streets, we came across El Tiki Taco, a colourful Mexican restaurant that immediately stood out from the surrounding Vietnamese eateries. It wasn’t what we expected to eat in Vietnam, but after such a gruelling climb, it felt like exactly the kind of comfort food we were craving.

It ended up becoming one of the most enjoyable evenings of our holiday.

A Relaxed Tropical Escape

Walking into El Tiki Taco instantly changed our mood. The colourful décor, tropical plants, rustic wooden furniture, and warm lighting created a relaxed holiday atmosphere. It felt more like a beach bar than a restaurant, making it incredibly easy to forget how tired we had been only minutes earlier.

The restaurant overlooks the lake at Hoa Lư Ancient Town, giving diners a pleasant setting to enjoy a meal while watching the evening crowds stroll by. Inside, vibrant murals, dreamcatchers and handcrafted decorations gave the restaurant plenty of personality without feeling overdone.

It was the sort of place that encouraged you to slow down, order another drink and simply enjoy the evening.

Ice Cold Beer Never Tasted So Good

Sometimes the best beer isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.

It’s the one waiting for you after an exhausting day.

After climbing Mua Cave in the sweltering heat, every sip of ice-cold local beer tasted incredibly refreshing. I ended up enjoying quite a few while we relaxed, and honestly, I couldn’t think of a better reward for surviving that climb.

There was no rush to leave. We took our time, chatted about the day’s adventures, and simply appreciated being able to sit in the cool evening breeze.

A Mexican Feast in the Heart of Ninh Bình

We decided to order several dishes to share, giving everyone the chance to sample different flavours. Our table quickly filled with Pork Carnitas Tacos, Chilli Beef Nachos and Chicken Quesadillas, making for a proper Mexican feast.

The Pork Carnitas Tacos were easily my favourite dish of the night. The slow-cooked pork was wonderfully tender and juicy, tucked inside soft tortillas and topped with fresh ingredients that added both crunch and freshness. Every bite delivered a perfect balance of savoury meat and vibrant flavours, making them incredibly satisfying without feeling too heavy.

The Chilli Beef Nachos arrived piled high with crisp tortilla chips generously covered with seasoned chilli beef and melted cheese. Every handful combined crunchy chips with rich, flavourful beef, creating exactly the sort of comforting sharing plate you hope for after a long day of sightseeing. It paired perfectly with an ice-cold beer.

The Chicken Quesadillas completed the meal beautifully. Toasted until golden brown, the tortillas enclosed tender chicken and plenty of melted cheese that stretched with every slice. Crispy on the outside and wonderfully cheesy inside, they were simple but exceptionally well executed.

What impressed me most was that everything tasted freshly prepared. The portions were generous, the ingredients tasted fresh and nothing felt rushed. Instead of relying on excessive spice, each dish focused on balanced flavours that made the food approachable and incredibly enjoyable.

More Than Just Great Food

One thing that really sets El Tiki Taco apart is that it offers more than just good food.

Rather than finishing dinner and heading off, we stayed for quite a while. The restaurant has a foosball table and a dartboard, so after eating we spent the evening playing a few friendly games while enjoying another round of drinks.

It transformed dinner into an evening of entertainment rather than simply another restaurant stop.

Travelling can sometimes become a checklist of attractions and sightseeing. This was one of those rare moments where we slowed down, relaxed and simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Those moments often become the ones you remember most.

A Great Way to End the Day

As the evening progressed, Hoa Lư Ancient Town became even more beautiful. The colourful lights reflected across the lake while visitors wandered through the streets enjoying the cooler evening temperatures. Sitting outside with good food, cold drinks and a relaxed atmosphere made us realise there couldn’t have been a better way to finish such an active day.

It was exactly the break our tired legs needed before continuing our adventures around Ninh Bình.

Final Thoughts

El Tiki Taco became one of the biggest surprises of our trip. We walked in simply looking for somewhere to cool down after climbing Mua Cave, but we ended up discovering a restaurant we’d happily return to.

The Pork Carnitas Tacos were outstanding, the Chilli Beef Nachos were perfect for sharing, and the Chicken Quesadillas rounded out the meal beautifully. Add several refreshing local beers, games of foosball and darts, and a welcoming lakeside atmosphere, and it became one of the most memorable evenings we spent in Vietnam.

If you’re exploring Hoa Lư Ancient Town after visiting Mua Cave or Tràng An, El Tiki Taco is a fantastic place to unwind. Whether you’re craving authentic Mexican food, a cold drink or simply somewhere to relax for a few hours, this colourful little restaurant delivers all three.

  1. Now that looks like the type of restaurant that would quickly become a favorite! I wish it was located near us. Every dish you described just made me hungrier and hungrier. The chicken quesadillas were especially notable. Quesadillas like that are simple, but somehow I’ve still ordered quesadillas that are lackluster at best. It sounds like this restaurant is doing things the right way!
