Lokanta (Grey Lynn, Auckland, New Zealand)

A rare date night led us to one of Auckland’s best Mediterranean restaurants. Beautiful Greek-inspired dishes, warm hospitality, and flavours that transported us straight to the Aegean.  Lokanta in Grey Lynn Auckland serves authentic Mediterranean cuisine including flaming saganaki, slow-cooked lamb and sticky beef cheeks.

My wife absolutely loves Mediterranean food. Greek salad, hummus, souvlaki, shakshuka, grilled meats, you name it and it’s probably one of her favourites. Finding a good Mediterranean restaurant on the North Shore, however, isn’t always easy. Most of our local dining options lean towards Chinese, Korean or Japanese cuisine, which we also love, but every now and then she starts craving those bright Mediterranean flavours.

One evening our daughter had plans with her friends, leaving just the two of us for a rare date night. These days they’re becoming more common as she’s grown more independent, and we certainly aren’t complaining. I searched around for somewhere nearby but came up empty, until I found Lokanta in Grey Lynn. The reviews were excellent, so off we went.

Grey Lynn has a habit of hiding some of Auckland’s best restaurants in plain sight, and Lokanta is definitely one of them. From the outside it looks understated, but once you step through the doors you’re welcomed by warm lighting, rustic décor and a lively atmosphere that immediately makes you feel comfortable. It strikes that perfect balance between casual neighbourhood restaurant and somewhere you’d happily celebrate a special occasion.

The restaurant was busy but never noisy, with conversations flowing around the room and staff moving effortlessly between tables. It felt more like dining in someone’s welcoming home than simply eating out.

Warm Hospitality

One thing that stood out throughout the evening was the service. The staff were genuinely warm and attentive without ever becoming intrusive. They happily explained dishes, offered recommendations when asked, and allowed us to enjoy our meal at a relaxed pace.

There was never any pressure to rush through courses. Instead, they encouraged exactly what Mediterranean dining is all about, taking your time, sharing food, enjoying good company, and simply relaxing.

What We Ordered

Flaming Saganaki (NZ$27), We couldn’t resist starting with the restaurant’s famous Flaming Saganaki.

The presentation alone makes this worth ordering. As it arrives at the table, the cheese is dramatically flambéed with aniseed, creating an impressive burst of flames that instantly grabs everyone’s attention.

Fortunately, it isn’t just theatre.

The halloumi develops a beautiful golden crust while remaining wonderfully soft inside. The garlic pidé bruschetta is perfect for scooping up every last bit of melted cheese, while the roasted peppers add a gentle sweetness that balances the richness. The subtle aroma from the aniseed lifts the entire dish without overpowering it.

It’s exactly the sort of starter that’s made for sharing.

To accompany dinner we ordered a crisp Mythos Beer (NZ$14) but they ran out and gave me this Nissos Pilsner and a glass of Ruffino Lumina Prosecco (NZ$13).

The Nissos paired beautifully with the grilled and cheesy dishes, while the prosecco added a refreshing sparkle that complemented the lighter Mediterranean flavours. The wine list is thoughtfully selected without feeling intimidating, offering plenty of choices at reasonable Auckland prices.

Sticky Beef Cheeks (NZ$36), If there was one standout dish of the evening, this was it.

The beef cheeks had clearly spent hours slowly cooking until they became meltingly tender. Every bite simply fell apart with a fork. The rich, glossy sauce carried deep savoury flavours with just enough sweetness from the figs to keep everything beautifully balanced.

Beneath the beef sat a silky orange purée, while chargrilled courgettes contributed a subtle smokiness. The walnut and pomegranate muhammara added texture, nuttiness and little bursts of freshness that stopped the dish from becoming too heavy.

It’s one of those meals where every forkful offers something slightly different.

Special of the Day, Slow-Cooked Lamb Leg, the special that evening featured lamb leg slowly cooked in its own juices, and it perfectly showcased what traditional Mediterranean cooking does so well.

The meat was incredibly tender, practically falling apart as soon as the fork touched it. Rich without being overly heavy, it delivered deep comforting flavours developed through patient slow cooking rather than excessive seasoning.

Served alongside seasonal vegetables and its own rich cooking juices, it felt wonderfully rustic, exactly the sort of hearty meal you’d imagine enjoying in a countryside taverna overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Sometimes simple cooking executed well is all you need.

Atmosphere & Service

Throughout dinner the service remained consistently excellent. Our drinks never stayed empty for long, plates arrived at a comfortable pace, and staff checked on us just enough without interrupting our conversation.

There’s an authenticity to Lokanta that extends beyond the food. The staff genuinely seem proud of what they serve, and that enthusiasm creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the restaurant.

The rustic interior, warm lighting and lively dining room all combine to create somewhere you’ll happily spend an entire evening.

Pricing

Lokanta sits comfortably within Auckland’s mid-range dining scene.

  • Flaming Saganaki – NZ$27.00
  • Sticky Beef Cheeks – NZ$36.00
  • Special Lamb Dish – Forgot the price but it was on the board
  • Mythos Beer – NZ$14.00
  • Ruffino Lumina Prosecco – NZ$13.00

Considering the generous portions, quality ingredients and excellent service, the pricing feels fair and well justified.

Final Thoughts

Lokanta isn’t simply another Mediterranean restaurant, it delivers the complete dining experience.

Excellent food, genuinely warm hospitality and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the evening all come together beautifully. The Flaming Saganaki provides wonderful theatre, the Sticky Beef Cheeks are amongst the best slow-cooked beef dishes I’ve had in Auckland, and the lamb special reminded us just how satisfying honest Mediterranean cooking can be.

Most importantly, it gave my wife exactly what she had been craving.

With our daughter now enjoying more evenings out with friends, I suspect these little date nights will become more frequent. And judging by how much we enjoyed Lokanta, I have a feeling we’ll be returning sooner rather than later.

  1. I have a friend from New Zealand visiting right now. I’ll have to see if she’s been there.
