Brazilian Cafe and Bistro (Albany, North Shore City, New Zealand)

A colourful slice of Brazil hidden in Albany. From hearty Brazilian classics to an irresistible dessert cabinet, this cosy café brings a taste of South America to the North Shore. Brazilian Café & Bistro in Albany serves authentic Brazilian cuisine, homemade desserts and hearty café meals in a peaceful garden setting.

Albany has no shortage of cafés, but very few feel as unapologetically themselves as Brazilian Café & Bistro. Walk through the doors and you’re greeted by bright yellow walls, sunflower decorations, Portuguese being spoken around the room, and a dessert cabinet that immediately transports you somewhere far warmer than Auckland. It isn’t trying to be trendy or follow the latest café craze. Instead, it proudly celebrates Brazilian food and culture, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

The café sits in a quiet corner of Albany, tucked away from the busy shopping areas. Step outside and you’ll find yourself looking over open green fields with tennis courts nearby instead of rows of parked cars. It’s peaceful, relaxing and somewhere you can happily spend an afternoon lingering over lunch and dessert.

Brazilian restaurants are still relatively uncommon in Auckland, so whenever we find one it’s always an easy decision to give it a try. We love exploring cuisines that aren’t readily available, and this little café certainly offers something different from the usual brunch spots around the North Shore.

What We Ordered

Baião de Dois “Da Casa” (NZ$29.00) – One of Brazil’s best-known comfort dishes from the country’s northeast, this generous plate combines black-eyed beans, rice, smoked pork sausage, chorizo, grilled halloumi, capsicum, herbs, a fried egg, cassava sticks and fresh salad.

It certainly looked impressive when it arrived. The portion was generous and packed with ingredients, making it a very filling meal. The cassava fries were particularly enjoyable, adding a different texture that you don’t often see in Auckland cafés.

Flavour-wise, however, I found it reminded me of a well-made fried rice. That’s not necessarily a criticism, it was comforting and satisfying, but I expected a little more punch from the smoked meats and chorizo. Everything was cooked well and the ingredients tasted fresh, but overall it leaned towards subtle rather than bold flavours.

Brazilian Beef Burger (NZ$27.00) – The burger arrived looking every bit the part. A thick beef patty layered with ham, melted cheese, fresh salad and mayonnaise, all tucked inside a toasted ciabatta bun and served alongside thick-cut fries.

The beef was juicy enough and the ham added a nice layer of savouriness, while the ciabatta held everything together without becoming soggy.

It was a good burger, but if I’m being honest, at NZ$27 it faces some very stiff competition. Auckland has plenty of excellent burgers at a lower price point, so while this one was enjoyable, it wasn’t particularly memorable. If you’re already dining here, it’s a solid choice, but I probably wouldn’t make a special trip just for the burger alone.

Don’t Skip the Dessert Cabinet

Even if the mains don’t immediately catch your eye, make sure you leave room to browse the dessert cabinet.

This was honestly one of the highlights of the café. Colourful Brazilian truffles (brigadeiros), passionfruit mousse, caramel pudding, beautifully decorated cakes and even savoury pastries all line the display. Everything looks homemade, generous and full of personality rather than mass-produced.

It’s one of those cabinets where you walk in thinking you’ll skip dessert, only to find yourself changing your mind five minutes later.

Atmosphere & Service

The atmosphere perfectly matches the food. Bright, colourful and welcoming without feeling overdone. You can tell this café was built to serve its local Brazilian community first and foremost, which gives it a genuine authenticity that chain cafés often lack.

Service was warm, friendly and relaxed. Staff happily answered questions about unfamiliar dishes and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. Food took a little while to arrive, but that’s never a bad thing when everything appears freshly prepared rather than simply reheated.

Value for Money

Pricing here sits firmly on the higher end for an independent Albany café:

  • Baião de Dois – NZ$29
  • Brazilian Beef Burger – NZ$27
  • Desserts – NZ$8–14

The portions are decent, especially for the Brazilian dishes, but overall it does feel pricey. If the food were exceptional or the servings huge, the cost would make more sense, but that’s not quite the case here. The burger in particular feels expensive for what it delivers, especially when there are better (and cheaper) burgers elsewhere on the North Shore. You’re partly paying for the novelty of Brazilian cuisine and the peaceful location, but the value doesn’t fully match the price tag.

Final Thoughts

Brazilian Café & Bistro brings something genuinely different to Auckland’s North Shore. It’s not trying to imitate the modern brunch cafés or chase social‑media trends. Instead, it leans into its identity, serving homestyle Brazilian comfort food in a cheerful, welcoming space surrounded by greenery.

While the mains didn’t completely win me over, they were prepared well and offered flavours you won’t find in many other cafés around Auckland. The quiet location, friendly service, and standout dessert cabinet all add to the experience. But the pricing does sit on the higher side, and for the quality and quantity, it doesn’t always feel justified.

If you’re curious about Brazilian cuisine or simply want a café that feels refreshingly different from the usual brunch circuit, it’s still worth a visit. And whatever you do, don’t skip the dessert cabinet, it might just be the strongest reason to come back.
