Some places become part of your routine without you realising it. After years away, we returned to Little Creatures with Coco after a waterfront walk and found the same relaxed atmosphere, great food, and dog-friendly charm that made us regulars in the first place.  Little Creatures Hobsonville offers woodfired pizza, pork belly, beef fat fries and a dog-friendly waterfront dining experience.

There’s something special about revisiting a place that once formed part of your weekly routine. Life moves on, priorities shift, and before you know it, months become years. Then one day you find yourself back at a familiar table wondering why you ever stopped coming in the first place.

That was exactly how we felt when we returned to Little Creatures in Hobsonville.

Before 2022, this waterfront venue was one of our favourite destinations after taking Coco for a long walk around the Hobsonville Point coastal paths. The routine was simple but perfect. We’d spend the late morning exploring the waterfront, clocking up several kilometres with an energetic dog leading the way, before settling down for a well-earned lunch overlooking the harbour.

Somehow that tradition faded as work became busier and schedules became more complicated. This week, however, we finally found ourselves back where it all began.

A Waterfront Favourite for Dog Owners

One of the biggest reasons we have always loved Hobsonville is how welcoming it is for dog owners.

Many restaurants in the area embrace the outdoor lifestyle that makes this part of Auckland so appealing. Little Creatures has always been one of the standouts. Their outdoor seating area provides plenty of space for diners accompanied by four-legged family members, creating an atmosphere that feels relaxed rather than restrictive.

As soon as we arrived, Coco settled in comfortably, almost as if she remembered the place herself. There was no stress, no concerns about whether dogs were welcome, just a pleasant lunch enjoying good food while she relaxed beside us.

For anyone looking for dog-friendly dining on the North-Western side of Auckland, Little Creatures remains one of the easiest recommendations.

The Perfect Setting

Location plays a huge role in the appeal of Little Creatures.

Situated within the bustling Hobsonville waterfront precinct, it combines harbour views with a casual atmosphere that encourages people to linger. Families, cyclists, dog walkers and groups of friends all seem to find their way here throughout the day.

Unlike many trendy venues that can feel overly polished or pretentious, Little Creatures strikes a comfortable balance. It feels lively without becoming overwhelming and busy without feeling crowded.

On a sunny noon, it is exactly the kind of place where you can lose track of time.

What We Ordered

With a long walk behind us and healthy appetites to satisfy, we opted for a mix of favourites and sharing plates.

Mortadella Pizza

The Mortadella Pizza (NZ$32.00) immediately caught our attention.

Generously topped with delicate slices of mortadella, fresh rocket and confit garlic, it delivered a lovely balance between richness and freshness. The cured meat brought a subtle buttery flavour while the peppery rocket helped cut through the richness.

What impressed me most was the pizza base. Little Creatures has long been known for producing quality pizzas, and this one reminded us why. The crust had the ideal combination of chewiness and crispness, with just enough char from the oven to add extra character.

Simple ingredients executed well often create the most memorable dishes, and this pizza certainly fell into that category.

Roast Pork Belly

The Roast Pork Belly (NZ$35.00) proved equally satisfying.

Pork belly can sometimes disappoint if either the crackling or the meat falls short, but thankfully neither issue appeared here. The skin delivered the crunch everyone hopes for, while the meat underneath remained tender and juicy.

Served alongside roasted crushed potatoes, sweet and sour cabbage and a rich cider jus, the dish felt hearty without being excessively heavy. Every component played its role well, creating a balanced plate that suited the cooler afternoon breeze coming off the water.

It was comfort food done properly.

Beef Fat Fries

No visit to Little Creatures feels complete without an order of their famous Makikhi Beef Fat Fries served with Chipotle Mayonnaise (NZ$13.50).

These thick-cut chips have developed something of a reputation over the years, and for good reason. Cooked in beef fat, they possess an extra layer of savoury richness that elevates them far beyond ordinary fries.

Golden, crisp and incredibly moreish, they were impossible to stop eating.

If you’re dining with a group, ordering a portion for the table is almost mandatory.

Drinks for a Sunny Afternoon

To accompany the meal, we chose a couple of refreshing drinks that suited the warm weather perfectly.

The Raspberry Lemon Kombucha (NZ$9.00) was bright, tangy and refreshing, offering a pleasant balance between sweetness and acidity.

The Feijoa Pear drink (NZ$7.00) delivered a distinctly New Zealand flavour profile. The feijoa notes provided that unmistakable tropical sweetness many Kiwis know and love, while the pear added a smooth and refreshing finish.

Both were ideal choices for a relaxed afternoon by the waterfront.

The Service

Despite being busy, service remained efficient throughout our visit.

The staff were friendly, approachable and attentive without being intrusive. Food arrived promptly and drinks were never left waiting long.

More importantly, the entire venue maintained a welcoming atmosphere. It felt like a place genuinely designed for people to enjoy themselves rather than simply eat and leave.

That relaxed hospitality contributes significantly to the venue’s enduring popularity.

Why We’ll Be Back

Returning to Little Creatures felt surprisingly nostalgic.

It reminded us of a period when weekend routines were simpler and when a long walk followed by lunch by the water was something we did almost without thinking. While the food was excellent, what stood out most was the feeling the venue creates.

Good restaurants provide meals.

Great restaurants become part of people’s lives.

Little Creatures manages to do both.

With excellent pizzas, satisfying mains, outstanding fries, dog-friendly outdoor seating and a prime waterfront location, it remains one of the most enjoyable casual dining destinations in Hobsonville.

After this visit, it feels like a tradition worth reviving.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the best dining experiences come from returning to familiar places rather than chasing something new.

Our return to Little Creatures reminded us why it became a favourite all those years ago. The food was consistently good, the atmosphere remained welcoming, and Coco was just as happy as we were.

As the afternoon sun reflected off the harbour and we settled into that familiar rhythm once again, it became clear that some traditions deserve a second chance.

I suspect we won’t wait another few years before coming back.
