FamousEddy (Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand)

TikTok got this one right. Massive portions, perfectly cooked steak, ridiculously good fried chicken, and pasta dishes that look far better in real life than they do on the menu.  FamousEddy in Mount Eden Auckland serves steak pasta, fried chicken sandwiches, and fusion comfort food with generous portions.

Sometimes social media gets things wrong. A dish looks amazing online, you arrive full of anticipation, and reality falls well short of the hype. Then there are places like FamousEddy in Mount Eden, where the exact opposite happens.

I first came across FamousEddy through TikTok. Video after video showed people raving about their creamy pasta, steak dishes, and fried chicken sandwiches. Looking at the menu photos when we arrived, I honestly was not convinced. The pictures looked fairly ordinary and did not really do much to sell the food.

In fact, if the owners are reading this, I have a suggestion: invest in better food photography. Or better yet, give me free food 😁 and I will happily take the photos for you.

Thankfully, we trusted the internet this time.

And thankfully, the internet was right.

A Hidden Gem on Dominion Road

Located on Dominion Road in Mount Eden, FamousEddy has developed a loyal following, and after one visit it becomes easy to understand why.

The restaurant has a casual old-school diner feel to it. Large signage, outdoor seating, and a welcoming atmosphere make it stand out among the many eateries lining Dominion Road. The al fresco seating area is particularly inviting during Auckland’s warmer days, creating a relaxed environment that encourages lingering over lunch or dinner.

Inside, the restaurant feels lively and energetic. It can get quite busy, particularly during weekends, which is always a good sign. Despite the crowds, service remained friendly and efficient throughout our visit.

The dining room itself can feel a little cramped when the restaurant fills up, especially for larger groups, but tables turn over quickly and the staff work hard to keep everything running smoothly.

Generous Portions That Deliver

One thing became immediately obvious once the food arrived. The portions here are huge.

The photos online do not fully prepare you for the amount of food that lands on your table. Every dish looked substantial, generously plated, and designed to leave you completely satisfied.

What impressed me even more was that despite the generous serving sizes, the quality never felt compromised.  Everything was cooked properly.  Nothing felt rushed. Nothing felt like quantity over quality.

Creamy Garlic Pasta with Beef

The standout dish of the meal was easily the Creamy Garlic Pasta with Beef (NZ$26.80).

Served with slices of beautifully cooked medium-rare steak arranged over a generous bed of creamy pasta, this dish immediately looked far better than the menu photo suggested.

The steak was cooked exactly as promised. Medium rare throughout, tender, juicy, and carrying plenty of beef flavour. Too often restaurants advertise medium rare only to serve something closer to medium well, but FamousEddy got it spot on.

The pasta itself was equally impressive.

The garlic cream sauce coated every strand beautifully without becoming overly heavy. Rich parmesan flavour, garlic, butter, cream, and chives created a comforting dish that felt indulgent without becoming overwhelming.

As the dish cooled slightly, the sauce became a little richer and oilier, but while hot it was absolutely delicious.

This is the sort of pasta you find yourself craving again days later.

Tomato Cream Sauce Pasta with Smoked Bacon

We also ordered the Tomato Cream Sauce Pasta with Smoked Bacon (NZ$20.80).

This dish featured teriyaki smoked pork belly alongside pasta coated in a creamy tomato-based sauce enriched with parmesan, garlic, cream, butter, and cherry tomatoes.

The pork belly was one of the highlights. Smoky, savoury, and beautifully caramelised, it added depth and richness to every bite.

The tomato cream sauce struck a nice balance between acidity and creaminess. It never became too rich, while the parmesan added a welcome savoury element throughout.

Most importantly, the pasta itself was cooked properly.  No soggy noodles.  No overcooked pasta.  Just perfectly cooked pasta carrying the sauce exactly as it should.

Fried Chicken Sandwich

Then there was the Fried Chicken Sandwich (NZ$17.80).

This is not one of those neatly stacked burgers designed for Instagram.  This thing is a monster.  The sandwich comes with thick buttermilk fried chicken thighs, pickles, slaw, homemade sauce, and soft brioche toast served alongside seasoned fries.

The chicken itself was outstanding.  The coating remained incredibly crisp while the meat stayed juicy and tender inside. Even after sitting on the table for a while, the coating never felt greasy or oily. That is often the true test of good fried chicken.  The homemade sauce added richness, while the pickles helped cut through the richness of the fried chicken.

Everything worked together perfectly.

If you arrive specifically craving fried chicken, this sandwich alone justifies the visit.

Do Not Skip the Chilli Sauce

One thing several customers recommended was FamousEddy’s homemade chilli sauce.

They were right.

This is not a sauce that tries to burn your mouth off. Instead, it focuses on flavour. Aromatic garlic, shallots, subtle spice, and a touch of sweetness create something that complements almost everything on the menu.

I found myself adding it to the pasta, dipping fries into it, and even pairing it with the fried chicken.

It elevated every dish without overpowering them.

Service That Matches the Food

Despite the restaurant being busy during our visit, service remained excellent.

Food arrived surprisingly quickly considering the number of diners inside. Staff were friendly, attentive, and clearly proud of what they were serving.

The team cleared tables efficiently, kept the restaurant tidy, and maintained a welcoming atmosphere throughout the meal.

You get the impression that the kitchen genuinely cares about consistency, which explains why so many customers become repeat visitors.

Final Thoughts

FamousEddy is one of those restaurants that proves first impressions can be misleading.

The menu photos may not fully showcase what the kitchen is capable of, but once the food arrives, everything makes sense. Generous portions, quality ingredients, properly cooked proteins, and flavourful sauces combine to create comfort food that feels genuinely satisfying.

The Creamy Garlic Pasta with Beef was easily the star of the meal, while the Fried Chicken Sandwich delivered some of the best fried chicken I have had in Auckland. The Tomato Cream Pasta with Smoked Bacon provided a rich and satisfying alternative that was equally enjoyable.

Combined with friendly service, a lively atmosphere, and reasonable pricing for the quality and portion sizes, it is easy to see why FamousEddy continues to attract such a loyal following.

Sometimes TikTok hype is justified.

This is one of those times.

  • In the 90’s I went to Auckland as an exchange student and stated in a family in Mount Albert which was such a fantastic experience. I think it is quite close to Mount Eden. I will make sure to keep this address in mind when we get back for a visit! ~Nessa

  • I totally know what you mean about social media, Raymund - sometimes it's spot-on, other times not so much. (We call those Tik Tok Fails!) This one certainly doesn't look like a Tik Tok Fail. We're in between mealtimes here right now, but that steak made my stomach growl - it looks amazing! But, yes, the photos (in the menu, not yours) leave something to be desired for sure. They just need to hire you!
