A personal review of Kabini Mystery Maze Resort & Spa in Wayanad, covering resort dining, safari adventures, and overall stay experience.  Late arrivals, missing bags, rattling 4x4s, and a jungle moment that made everything worth it. This stay delivered stories we will never forget.

Kabini Mystery Maze Resort & Spa was our base for the weekend, though our arrival there was anything but smooth. We reached the resort close to 10:00 PM, well past the original schedule. Luckily, lunch earlier in the day had already shifted everyone’s hunger clock, otherwise the mood on the buses might have been very different. Even so, by the time we arrived, dinner was the only thing keeping spirits afloat.

The delays were unavoidable but exhausting. Along the way, we had stopped at a sunflower farm, visited En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village where we went on a 4×4 off-road experience, and dropped by Gandhigramam Spices for some spice shopping. Each stop added time, and managing 60 people across two large tourist buses and two minibuses turned into a logistical headache. To make things more complicated, buses were mixed on the final leg, and we were told to jump onto the first available bus and not worry about belongings.

We arrived at Kabini Mystery Maze Resort & Spa without our bags. Dinner was already being served, so we headed straight to the dining area while waiting for the other bus to find its way to the resort. It took nearly another hour before we were reunited with our belongings, which meant no shower, no refresh, just straight into food and patience.

Safari First, Food Later

Breakfast the next morning never really happened for us. A small group 8 people, including myself, signed up for an early safari that started at 5:30 AM. The resort kitchen was understandably not ready at that hour, so we relied on biscuits and bread before heading out. Food would have to wait, because the adventure ahead demanded full attention.

We began our jungle safari at the Veeranhosahalli gate of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, where we met our driver and climbed into an open-top 4×4. The forest air felt cool and clean, a sharp contrast to the cities we had left behind. As we drove deeper into the reserve, I kept my phone camera ready, scanning trees and bushes for any hint of movement.

Our driver mentioned recent tiger sightings, which is exactly what you want to hear at the start. After turning off the tarmac and onto forest trails, silence settled in. No alarm calls, no sudden movements. That silence carried mixed emotions. Being surrounded by untouched nature felt incredible, yet the realisation that predators might be resting elsewhere slowly crept in.

An hour passed with only spotted deer grazing calmly. Then came the call. Another driver had reported a tiger sighting. What followed was chaos. Speed limits became suggestions. Our 4×4, high-centred and seatbelt-free, bounced violently across muddy tracks at speeds that felt completely unreasonable, 80km/h. We arrived too late. This happened again. And again. Four times in total. Each time, relief came not from excitement, but from simply surviving the drive.

We returned to the resort empty-handed but determined. Lunch awaited, and after that, we would try again.

Resort Dining, Resort Expectations

The food I am about to describe is a combination of dinner on arrival night and lunch after our first safari. It was a classic resort-style Indian buffet, covering North Indian, South Indian, Indo-Chinese, and familiar crowd-pleasers.

Desserts included gulab jamun, soft and syrupy, and fruit custard, chilled and light. Salads ranged from a Greek salad to a surprisingly good halloumi and watermelon combination. Curd rice offered much-needed comfort after spice-heavy dishes.

Starters featured boneless tandoori chicken and vegetable pakoras. Mains included paneer butter masala, South Indian-style chicken curry, and a robust mutton curry. There were vegetable hakka noodles, peppery fish fry, and enough rice-based options to keep plates full.

Was it amazing? Not really. After days of standout meals elsewhere, this felt average. To be fair, this was a resort kitchen, not a destination restaurant. Some dishes worked well, others felt forgettable. Still, it served its purpose. It fuelled us for what came next.

The Moment That Changed Everything

The second safari changed the tone of the trip completely. Same driver, same madness whenever a call came in, same heart-in-mouth driving. As 5:00 PM approached, hope faded. Then another call came through. This time, we arrived second at the spot.

And there they were. A mother tiger and two cubs, crossing the path slowly. We watched for nearly an hour. The cubs hesitated, crying and unsure, intimidated by the line of 4x4s. The mother crossed first, returned, played with them, reassured them, and eventually guided them across. It was raw, emotional, and unforgettable. Behind us, more than 20 vehicles waited, but we had the front-row seat.

Final Thoughts

Kabini Mystery Maze Resort & Spa is not about luxury in the traditional sense. Rooms were comfortable, facilities decent, and the setting felt almost Bali-like, tucked away from civilisation. The real value of the stay came from the experience around it.

Despite logistical hiccups, average meals, and moments of genuine fear on forest trails, the reward was something rare. A moment in the wild that made every delay, every cold biscuit breakfast, and every bumpy ride completely worth it.
