Benny’s (Takapuna, North Shore City, New Zealand)
An honest review of Benny’s Takapuna, known for smashed beef burgers, poutine, thick shakes, and American diner vibes. Beach breeze, smashed beef, gravy-drenched chips and a proper thick shake. Benny’s Takapuna lives up to the hype.
Benny’s had been on our radar for a while. Between solid Google reviews and my daughter, who works nearby, telling us people were constantly raving about it, expectations were definitely set high. So one weekend, we finally made our way to Takapuna to see if it really deserved the hype.
We arrived during a busy period but managed to grab a table by the window, which turned out to be a great choice. Being able to people-watch along Hurstmere Road while the sea breeze drifted in from the beach set the mood nicely. Takapuna does that well, casual, lively, and relaxed all at once.
First Impressions & Atmosphere
Benny’s feels exactly like what it’s trying to be: an American-style smashed burger diner done properly. The place was spotless, well organised, and buzzing without feeling chaotic. Service was friendly and efficient, and despite being busy, food came out at a good pace.
It’s not particularly cheap, but it’s also not pretending to be fast food. This is proper burger joint pricing, and once the food hits the table, it starts to make sense.
The Burgers – Smashed and Done Right
We ordered three burgers, all built around 100% New Zealand premium beef, smashed fresh and served on soft brioche buns.
Cheeseburger (NZ$14.90) Smashed beef patty, cheese, burger sauce, onion & pickles. This is simplicity done well. Juicy patty, good crust from the smash, balanced sauce, and fresh bun. Nothing fancy, just a solid cheeseburger that knows what it’s supposed to be.
Canadian (NZ$19.90) Smashed beef patty, bacon, chips, mozzarella cheese, brown gravy, mustard mayo & onion rings. This one’s messy, indulgent, and very much a knife-and-napkin job. It’s rich, heavy, and completely over the top in the best way. The combination of gravy, chips, and onion rings inside the burger isn’t subtle, but it works. Definitely not an everyday burger, but a fun one when you’re ready to commit.
Benny’s Double (NZ$20.90) Double smashed beef patty, double cheese, onion, pickles, tomato & lettuce. If you want to taste the beef, this is the one to get. Two patties, properly seasoned, juicy, and stacked without falling apart. The fresh veg helps cut through the richness, and the bun holds everything together surprisingly well.
The Poutine – Good, But Let’s Be Honest
Traditional Poutine (NZ$13.90) Seasoned chips, mozzarella, brown gravy. Let’s address the elephant in the room, it’s not authentic poutine. There are no cheese curds here, just mozzarella, and the gravy tastes like it comes from an instant packet.
That said, it was still good.
The chips were well seasoned and crisp, the cheese was stretchy, and the gravy did its job. If you’re expecting Montreal-level poutine, you’ll be disappointed. If you’re just after something indulgent and comforting, this still hits the spot.
Chocolate Thick Shake – A Proper One
Chocolate Thick Shake (NZ$7.90) This deserves its own mention. Properly thick, rich, and not watered down. The kind of thick shake that actually needs a spoon before the straw becomes useful. Old-school in the best way, and easily one of the better thick shakes we’ve had in Auckland.
Overall Thoughts
Everything we tried was well seasoned, flavourful, and clearly made with care. Portions were generous, ingredients felt fresh, and nothing tasted rushed or sloppy. The atmosphere matched the food, casual, fun, and confident.
Is it cheap? No.
Is it worth it? Absolutely.
Hands down, this is one of the best burger joints in Auckland. I’ve eaten burgers all over the city, and very few come close. Dare I say it, this is up there with Fergburger in Queenstown. Fresh buns, flavourful patties, excellent fries, and solid service all around.
Final Verdict
Benny’s delivers exactly what it promises: big, bold, American-style burgers done right. Great location, great vibe, and food that lives up to the reputation.
