After a 13-kilometre scooter ride under the scorching Vietnamese midday sun, we arrived at Thanh Ha Pottery Village, a charming community known for its centuries-old ceramic craftsmanship. The breeze helped a little, but by the time we parked the scooter and explored on foot, we were drenched and sticky from the heat.

The narrow streets here are lined with trees, pottery displays, and the occasional artist shaping clay under shaded verandas. We decided to leave our scooter in a corner and explore on foot, since most lanes are quite tight and walking is the best way to experience the village’s rustic charm.

Just when we needed a break, we stumbled upon GOM Coffee, a pottery workshop café tucked under a canopy of trees.

Pottery, Hospitality, and a Heartwarming Gesture

When you enter Thanh Ha Pottery Village, you’re given a small voucher that can be redeemed for a pottery souvenir at participating workshops. GOM Coffee happens to be one of those spots, so we decided to stop by and redeem ours. The freebie? A charming pottery whistle shaped like an animal; you can choose your own. We both picked dogs, a lovely keepsake from this village experience.

Since the sun was still blazing, we asked the lady running the café if we could stay for a while. She welcomed us with the kind of warmth that’s hard to put into words. Without hesitation, she set up a table for us, turned on two electric fans, and even smiled as she saw us looking half-melted by the heat.

Then something delightful happened. I noticed a star fruit (carambola) tree nearby, its branches heavy with green-yellow fruit. It’s been more than 20 years since I last had star fruit, probably back in the Philippines, so my instinct was to grab one from the ground. The elderly lady, seeing my interest, quietly fetched a fruit picker, reached up for a few ripe ones, washed them, sliced them, and served them to us with iced tea, free of charge.

No words, no fuss, just genuine kindness. That moment captured what true Vietnamese hospitality is all about.

Drinks that Hit the Spot

We felt a little shy after all that generosity, so of course, we ordered a couple of drinks as thanks. I went for a mango shake, while my wife opted for iced lemon tea.

Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the moment, but those drinks were absolutely perfect. The mango shake was thick and nearly pure mango, sweet, creamy, and deeply refreshing. The iced lemon tea struck that perfect balance between sweetness, tanginess, and bitterness. In that heat, it felt like heaven in a glass.

Prices were very affordable (I can’t recall the exact figures, but they were among the cheapest we’ve had), and the quality far exceeded expectations.

A Beautiful Space for a Peaceful Break

The café itself is a charming oasis, open-air, shaded, and surrounded by pottery works. There’s a calm, creative energy about the space, with plants and ceramics blending naturally into the environment. You can see pottery pieces for sale, and some visitors even join workshops here.

It’s the perfect place to rest after exploring the village, sip on something cold, and watch the world go by slowly.

Above and Beyond Service

What struck me most about GOM Coffee wasn’t just the drinks or the setting, but the sheer kindness of the people who run it. They didn’t have to offer us fruit, they didn’t have to switch on multiple fans or prepare iced tea for free, but they did, wholeheartedly and without expecting anything in return.

In all our travels through Vietnam, this was one of the most touching examples of genuine, unpretentious hospitality.
