Master Kong (Wellington Central, Wellington, New Zealand)

Fusion flavours, bold interiors, and generous portions—Master Kong in Wellington is a fun, tasty stop on your next city visit.  Vibrant decor, punchy flavours, and a menu that reads like a greatest hits of Asian fusion—Master Kong nails the vibe and taste.

I’ve always believed that the dining experience is more than just about the food—it’s about the mood, the atmosphere, the people, and the energy of a place. That was the case when I dined at Master Kong on my final night of a business trip to Wellington. Located along Customhouse Quay, this restaurant is an explosion of colour and character, both on the plate and in its fit-out.

Stepping inside on a chilly Wellington evening, I was instantly wrapped in warmth—not just from the heating, but from the vibrant decor that made me feel like I’d entered a night market somewhere in Southeast Asia. Think bamboo panels contrasted with jungle-themed wallpaper, vintage Asian lamps casting a warm glow, and neon signage splashing the walls in bold pinks and reds. It’s chaotic in the most delightful, curated way—like a fever dream you don’t want to wake up from.

A Warm Welcome on a Cold Night

While many eateries are slow to warm up in the service department, Master Kong was firing on all cylinders. I had multiple staff members check in, take my order, and deliver dishes without delay. It was my first time here, but they made me feel like a regular. Despite being alone, the space didn’t feel isolating—rather, I enjoyed the buzz around me and the constant chatter of satisfied diners.

Round One – The Appetiser Experience

I kicked off the meal with 12-Spice Salt & Sichuan Pepper Squid (NZ$21.00). The menu marked this dish with a chilli icon, hinting at fiery heat, but in reality, it was far more approachable. The squid was tender and well-seasoned, with a subtle spice profile that was more flavourful than overpowering. It’s the kind of dish that keeps your chopsticks busy.

Next came the Crispy Pork Ribs with Gochujang BBQ Sauce and Pickles (NZ$24.00). These ribs were a study in contrast—succulent and soft on the inside, with a satisfying crunch on the outside. I suspect they were parboiled before frying, which made them fork-tender, though the inner meat was milder in flavour. Thankfully, the sauce and outer crust brought the dish back to life with a punch of umami and sweetness. They were fun to eat, even for someone already thinking about mains.

Round Two – The Main Attraction

While the appetisers were substantial on their own, I pressed on with the Pork Belly Mee Goreng (NZ$35.00). It arrived heaving with four thick slabs of pork belly—each one perfectly twice-cooked for a tender bite and a caramelised edge. The Indonesian-style noodles underneath held their own, full of smoky wok hei and just the right chew. The portion was downright indulgent, a carnivore’s dream, and I couldn’t be happier.

By this stage, I was full—but satisfied. The balance of richness, texture, and generous servings made this meal a highlight of my quick stay in Wellington.

A Place with Personality

Master Kong is unapologetically loud—in design, in flavour, and in spirit. It’s not about replicating traditional Asian cuisine but reimagining it for a fun and modern Kiwi dining crowd. For those who prefer more subtle flavours, this may come off as slightly toned down compared to the real thing, but I appreciated it for what it is: a fusion experience done with confidence and flair.

What also stood out was their attention to detail and a team of staff who were both efficient and warm. If you’re dining solo, you won’t feel out of place. If you’re coming with friends, expect to share dishes and laughter in a lively setting.

Final Thoughts

Master Kong is a Wellington gem that embraces both the nostalgic and the novel. It brings together a little of everything—comfort food, bold interiors, fast service, and a splash of Asian flair—making it perfect for solo diners, dates, or group dinners. Next time you’re in the capital, make it a point to quickly visit. Just be warned: the portions are no joke, so come hungry.

The Pork Mee Goreng does take one’s eye and the S&P squid looks tasty – obviously a place to mention if I hear anyone > Wellington!

How rare it is to find a spot with the full experience, including ambiance that wraps you up in a different world, and food that keeps you there. It felt like a departure from the everyday even reading about it!
