Tucked beside a petrol station, Take a Bao offers exceptional Chinese cuisine, a cosy atmosphere, and surprisingly refined flavours. Who knew a restaurant beside a petrol station would deliver such incredible Chinese food? Every dish was spot on—definitely going back.
Last Sunday after church, we found ourselves caught in that all-too-familiar scenario—everyone wanted to catch up, but no one wanted to cook. It was one of those cold Auckland evenings that begged for warm comfort food, and someone suggested a spot tucked away on Albany Highway. Honestly, I had passed this place countless times and never thought twice. Nestled beside a petrol station, Take a Bao doesn’t exactly scream “dining destination.” But sometimes the best meals are found in the most unexpected places.
Cosy Interiors, Chinese Charm
Stepping inside was an immediate surprise. The decor felt like a cross between a traditional teahouse and a countryside lodge—bamboo chairs, rustic wooden tables, and antique teapots and earthenware cooking vessels adorning every corner. The ambience was warm and inviting, and we were seated at a large round table with an automated slow-turning lazy Susan, perfect for a group of hungry post-church diners.
Ordering was a little tricky at first, since the QR codes on the table led to a menu entirely in Chinese. Luckily, the friendly server helped us order everything. That alone tells you who their regulars are—clearly a popular spot for Auckland’s Chinese community, which is usually a great sign for authenticity.
Every Dish a Standout
We were nine in total and ordered generously. And when I say every dish had a good serving portion and was spot on, I genuinely mean it.
The Deep-Fried Eggplant with Oyster Sauce (NZ$26.60) was an absolute revelation. Lightly battered and fried until crisp, it had caramelised edges and a soft, creamy centre. Not greasy at all—just pure umami-laden perfection.
Then came the Spicy Diced Chicken with Peanuts (NZ$28.80). The glaze on the juicy chicken pieces was rich and slightly sticky, and the peanuts gave it that necessary crunch and a spicy kick.
But the highlight for me was the Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin Chunks (NZ$28.80). I don’t say this lightly—it was the best sweet and sour pork I’ve ever had. Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and just the right balance of sweet, savoury, and tangy.
The Salted Shredded Pork in Sweet Bean Sauce (NZ$32.80) was another surprise hit. It came with steamed buns, and when the staff noticed there were nine of us, they brought out extra buns and even more filling. Thoughtful service like that always stands out.
We also tried the Crab Roe Tofu (NZ$26.80), which was unexpectedly light and beautifully seasoned—perfect to balance out the richer dishes.’
For rice, we had two kinds: Yangzhou Fried Rice (NZ$20.80), which was simple but well-executed, and the indulgent Fried Jasmine Rice with Italian Black Truffle, Prawns, Clams, Squid, and Roe (NZ$22.80). Truffle and roe on fried rice? Yes please. It was rich, aromatic, and loaded with umami.
The Yellow Chives Stir-fried with Squid and Pork (NZ$28.80) was a lesson in texture—each slice of squid and pork cooked just right to complement one another.
Friendly Service and That Jujube Tea
Service was lovely throughout. Staff were friendly and accommodating, and though self-service is the norm for tea and cutlery, it worked perfectly in this relaxed setting. The tea is jujube tea—if you know, you know. It has a very distinct smell, but trust me, it’s worth trying.
The best part? The food is MSG-free for those who are particular, though I personally don’t mind a bit of MSG—it enhances flavour and often reduces the need for excess salt.
Worth Discovering
Take a Bao might be easy to overlook if you’re just driving by, but it’s definitely worth a visit. From the beautifully presented dishes to the comforting atmosphere, it ticks all the boxes. It’s the kind of place you want to keep to yourself—but it’s too good not to share.
