Mrs Bun (Rosedale, North Shore City, New Zealand)

Affordable and flavourful dumplings, buns, and Chinese street food with generous portions and friendly service in Rosedale, Auckland.  Steam, spice, and street food charm in Rosedale. From pillowy pork buns to crisp Jian Bing, this local favourite knows how to deliver.

Mrs Bun has always been on our radar, but it wasn’t until our daughter brought home a takeaway of their famous steamed buns that we truly took notice. She’d been talking up the place for a while, often stopping by for a quick bite or takeaway snack. After finally giving in and joining her for a visit, we were pleasantly surprised by what we found.

Set in a modest space on Apollo Drive in Rosedale, Mrs Bun is one of those neighbourhood gems that doesn’t shout for attention—but absolutely deserves it. With its simple interior, stacks of bamboo steamers, and the delicious smell of buns and dumplings wafting through the air, the place has an inviting warmth to it. What really stood out, aside from the food, was the set-up: each table is equipped with homemade chilli oil, soy sauce, and vinegar for seasoning to taste, a drink dispenser with cups for self-serve refreshments, and even complimentary soup. It’s unpretentious, generous, and practical—all signs of a good, honest food spot.

Generous Portions, Great Value

There’s a strong emphasis on affordability here, with numerous in-store promos that make trying new dishes easy on the wallet. When we visited, we focused on some of the customer favourites—starting with the OG bun.

Normally NZ$9.99 but available that day for a special NZ$6.99, the OG was stuffed with pork and spring onions. It had just the right balance of savoury meatiness and a gentle heat that crept in pleasantly. The bun itself was soft and slightly chewy, with that familiar comforting texture you get from a well-made steamed bun. This one definitely lived up to the hype.

We also tried the Jian Bing (NZ$9.00)—a Chinese-style mungbean pancake filled with crispy elements, herbs, and a drizzle of chilli sauce. It was substantial; one portion was enough to comfortably feed two people. This wasn’t your average street snack—it was hearty, full of texture, and packed with flavour.

And then came my personal favourite of the visit: the Fried Sweet Bread (NZ$4.50). It had this perfect balance of soft inside and crisp exterior, especially when eaten fresh and hot. It’s one of those things you could easily snack on without realising you’ve finished it.

To round out the meal, we had Soy Milk (NZ$4.50), which provided a cool, creamy contrast to all the spice and savoury notes.

Service with a Smile

The staff at Mrs Bun deserve special mention. They were approachable and friendly, happy to talk through the menu with us and make suggestions. Even though the place can get busy, the service was efficient and welcoming.

There’s clearly pride in what they do, and that atmosphere of genuine hospitality was felt throughout our visit. You don’t always get that personal touch when dining in fast-paced spots like this, but at Mrs Bun, it felt like an extension of someone’s home kitchen—complete with all the aromas and comfort that come with it.

Worth Repeating

Although this was our first proper dine-in experience at Mrs Bun, I can definitely see why my daughter’s been coming here for so long. The food is honest, flavourful, and very reasonably priced. Portions are generous and the menu is broad enough that you could keep coming back and still find something new to try.

Next time, I’ve got my eye on those combo deals—they seem like fantastic value. For anyone craving steamed buns, dumplings, or a little bit of Chinese street food comfort, this is easily one of the best spots on the Shore.
