When it comes to shrimp trucks in Hawaii, Giovanni’s usually steals the spotlight. It’s iconic, plastered with graffiti signatures, and almost always comes with a queue of tourists eager to get their garlic shrimp fix. But after doing some digging—and learning our lesson from Matsumoto Shave Ice—we decided to skip the hype and find something more under-the-radar and, hopefully, more delicious. That research led us to Jenny’s Shrimp Truck, a lesser-known but highly praised gem on Oahu’s North Shore.
Food Truck Day Done Right
This was part of our themed food truck day—dedicated to local favourites and casual eats. We were after big flavours without the stress of long lines or inconsistent quality. Jenny’s ticked all the boxes: shorter queues, a laid-back atmosphere, and promising reviews that pointed to bold flavours and perfectly cooked shrimp. Sold.

First Impressions and Vibe
Located just off Kamehameha Highway, Jenny’s has that chill, local-style setup—picnic tables (some shaded), open-air seating, and even the occasional roaming rooster. It’s a simple, no-frills experience, and that’s exactly what we were after. The staff (I think that was Jenny) were warm and quick with our order, setting the tone for a relaxed meal under the Hawaiian sun.

What We Ordered
We went for two of their top dishes: the spicy garlic shrimp, the butter garlic shrimp and coconut shrimp. All plates came generously portioned with steamed rice, a scoop of salad, and a wedge of pineapple. The shrimp were large, butterflied (for the garlic shrimp), and cooked perfectly—plump and juicy, with shells that peeled away easily.
Spicy Garlic Shrimp (US$17.00): A crowd favourite, and now I see why. It had the perfect kick—spicy enough to wake up your taste buds but still balanced. The sauce soaked into the rice beautifully.

Butter Garlic Shrimp(US$17.00): Rich, aromatic, and indulgent. The garlic hit just right—bold but not overpowering, and the buttery finish was heaven.
Coconut Shrimp (US$21.00): The batter is light and crispy, with a noticeable but not overpowering coconut flavour. It strikes a nice balance between sweet and savory.

The rice deserves a shout-out too. It wasn’t just a filler—this was flavourful, sticky rice that absorbed every drop of that luscious garlic sauce. Everything on the plate felt intentional and delicious.

What Sets Jenny’s Apart
What stood out most was the quality of the shrimp. They tasted fresh, slightly sweet, and held up perfectly to the bold sauces. Many reviews compare Jenny’s to Giovanni’s and come out saying Jenny’s wins for flavour and consistency. We’d have to agree.
A few more things we loved:
- Generous portions – Easily a full meal, and then some.
- Saucy goodness – They don’t skimp on sauce, especially over the rice.
- Quick, friendly service – No stress, no long waits.
- Atmosphere – It’s casual, family-friendly, and super inviting.
Only downside? Parking is limited. Be prepared to circle around a bit—but trust me, it’s worth it.

Final Thoughts
If you’re craving shrimp on the North Shore and want something with real flavour and none of the tourist-trap vibes, Jenny’s Shrimp Truck is where it’s at. While Giovanni’s might still be a box to tick for first-timers, Jenny’s delivers where it counts: taste, service, and overall satisfaction.
Definitely worth the drive from Waikiki—and definitely a place I’ll return to on our next trip.
