Gold Ribbon (Glen Eden, Auckland, New Zealand)
Decades of Filipino comfort food perfection—Gold Ribbon’s legendary Ube Cake, crispy pata, and halo-halo taste just like home. A must-visit for authentic flavours. Gold Ribbon in Glen Eden serves authentic Filipino dishes like sisig, dinuguan, and their famous Ube Cake, offering homestyle flavours for around 2 decades in Auckland.

Some cravings don’t just whisper—they shout. And when that craving is for honest-to-goodness Filipino comfort food, we know exactly where to go Gold Ribbon in Glen Eden. This little gem has been quietly serving Auckland’s Filipino community for nearly two decades, ever since their humble beginnings at the old Unitec campus in Mt Albert.
We usually head to Gold Ribbon when the craving hits for their legendary Halo-Halo and that irresistible Ube Cake, but this time, it went beyond a sweet tooth—we were hungry, tired, and just didn’t feel like cooking. To be honest, we don’t often dine at Filipino restaurants, not because they aren’t good, but because we can easily make most of these dishes at home. But on lazy days—like today—when the idea of prepping a meal feels like a mission, Gold Ribbon becomes our safety net. It’s a bit of a drive from home, but it’s the one Filipino restaurant in Auckland we fully trust for consistency, and they’ve earned that trust over the years.

The Flavours of Home
If you grew up on the flavours of Pampanga-style sisig or the comforting tang of a rich dinuguan, Gold Ribbon will feel like a warm hug from your lola. We went all in:

Pancit Bami (NZ$18.00) – A classic rice-and-egg noodle stir-fry loaded with pork belly and vegetables. Lightly seasoned but deeply savoury—perfect for setting the tone.
Pork Sisig (NZ$21.00) – Served sizzling hot with that glorious layer of crispy bits, onions, chillies, and a raw egg on top. Just like how it’s done in the Philippines—greasy, spicy, unapologetically bold.

Dinuguan (NZ$21.00) – Deep, rich, and vinegary, this pork blood stew is not for the faint of heart, but it hits the spot with a bowl of plain rice. Gold Ribbon nails the balance between earthiness and acidity.

Boneless Crispy Pata (NZ$38.00) – Imagine a whole crispy pork leg, but boneless. The skin? Golden and shatteringly crisp. The meat? Juicy and well-seasoned. It’s indulgence on a platter and could easily feed three.
Each dish felt unapologetically authentic—no fusion gimmicks, just the bold, savoury flavours we’d expect from a home kitchen in the Philippines.
Sweet, Cold, and Unforgettable
No visit is complete without a cold dessert—or two.
Fiesta Halo-Halo (NZ$16.00) – A riot of colours and textures. Ube ice cream, leche flan, sweet beans, jellies, and crushed ice all brought together with a generous pour of evaporated milk. Refreshing and nostalgic in every spoonful.

Ube Cake (NZ$6.00/slice) – This is the Gold Ribbon classic. Moist, light, and perfectly purple, with that soft coconut-tinged frosting. It vanished so fast we didn’t even manage a photo. That should tell you everything.

Mango Shake (NZ$9.00) – Not just your average shake—this one comes with tapioca pearls for a fun little chew. Sweet, tangy, and just right after a heavy meal.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Consistency – Their food hasn’t changed a bit over the years—and that’s a good thing. It’s like they’re cooking from the same family recipe binder since day one.
Good value – Big servings, small price tag. The crispy pata could easily feed a small family.
Homey vibes – It’s not fancy, but it doesn’t need to be. It feels like dining in your tita’s living room during a fiesta.

A Few Things to Note
Parking can be tricky, especially with the intersection right outside. Best to plan ahead.
Service is polite and efficient, though not the overly chatty kind. You’ll get what you need, with no fuss—just like back home.
Final Thoughts
There’s a reason Gold Ribbon has stood the test of time in Auckland’s food scene. They serve uncompromisingly authentic Filipino food, rich with flavour and full of heart. Whether you’re in the mood for something greasy and sizzling, something tangy and rich, or something cool and sweet, this spot delivers.
So next time the craving strikes—don’t hesitate. Just bring your appetite, a few friends to share the bounty, and maybe a container for Ube Cake leftovers. You’re going to want one.

I am not familiar at all with Filipino food but it looks enticing. Love that purple ube dessert!
