Sweet Soy Pork (Albany, North Shore City, New Zealand)

Sweet Soy Pork in Albany serves massive portions of melt-in-your-mouth braised meats in a sweet soy glaze. A hidden gem with heartwarming service.  Planned to eat elsewhere—ended up at Sweet Soy Pork by accident. BEST. MISTAKE. EVER. Their braised pork belly & beef tendons (all in that glossy sweet soy sauce) are next-level. Plus, the sweetest server who used Google Translate to chat with us. #HiddenGem #NorthShoreEats

Sometimes the best food finds happen by accident. That’s exactly how we discovered Sweet Soy Pork—a humble Albany eatery that’s now one of our favourite hidden gems.

How We Stumbled Upon It

After Sunday mass, our group had planned to eat at BBQ Noodles House, but after being told to wait 10 minutes (which turned into 15 with no table in sight), we grew impatient. Our backup plan—Saigon Commune, home of the famous “What the Beef Pho XL”—was unexpectedly closed despite it being their usual opening day. Hungry and slightly frustrated, we spotted Sweet Soy Pork nearby.

With minimal English signage and a menu that looked intimidating at first glance, we nearly walked out—but the warm smile from the lone server changed our minds. Though she spoke little English (we communicated via Google Translate), her hospitality was some of the best we’ve experienced in New Zealand. She patiently explained dishes, gifted us extra boba tea, and even shared stories about running the shop alone. What started as a backup meal turned into a memorable dining experience.

The Food: Comfort in Every Bite

Sweet Soy Pork specializes in slow-braised meats glazed in a rich, savory-sweet soy sauce. Every dish is built around this signature sauce—and trust us, it’s so good you won’t care that it’s the same base for everything.

We tried:

  • Sweet Soy Pork Belly (NZ$14.80) – Meltingly tender fat with a caramelized crust.
  • Braised Pork Knuckle Terrine (NZ$15.80) – Gelatinous, fall-apart goodness.
  • Braised Pork Trotter Rice with Sauce (NZ$14.80) – Same as above but this one is for the ones who love it with bones, it has more skin to meat ratio as well.
  • Beef Knee Tendons (NZ$18.80) – Silky and rich, dissolving on the tongue.
  • Fried Tofu (NZ$15.80) – Crispy outside, soaked in that addictive glaze.

Key notes:

Every dish comes with blanched greens, stewed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and pickled veggies—making it a complete meal.

  • The sauce is identical across all proteins (even the tofu), but it’s so good you won’t mind.
  • Portions are enormous (even more than Master Pig in the city).
  • Standout Extra: Boba Milk Tea (NZ$13.90 for 1L!)

A 1-litre jug of boba tea with four toppings? Yes, please! Served with extra glasses for sharing, it’s a steal—and the server even gave us the leftover blender contents.

Why It’s Special

  • Unpretentious authenticity – No fusion twists, just homestyle braised meats.
  • Generosity – Huge portions, fair prices, and a server who treats you like family.
  • Unique focus – Unlike other Asian eateries that juggle 100+ dishes, Sweet Soy Pork masters one technique perfectly.

Who Should Go?

  • Fans of Taiwanese/Cantonese braised meats (think: Dongpo pork).
  • Budget-conscious diners (meals under NZ$20 that fill two people).
  • Those tired of crowded, overpriced CBD spots like Master Pig.

Verdict

A must-try for comfort food lovers. Don’t expect fancy decor—just honest, delicious food served with heart.
