If you’re a fan of Korean fried chicken, you’ve probably heard of bb.q Chicken, the world-renowned chain that has finally made its way to Auckland. Located on Queen Street, this bustling eatery brings the authentic flavours of South Korea to our city, offering a sizzling array of fried chicken and other Korean dishes. After seeing it pop up on TikTok, I knew I had to check it out. Here’s how my experience went.

The Ambiance

bb.q Chicken is spread across two levels, with the takeaway counter on the ground floor and a spacious dining area on the first floor. The atmosphere is lively and reminiscent of the bustling fried chicken joints you’d find in Korea. The decor is modern yet cosy, with plenty of seating for groups or solo diners. Despite being busy, the dining area didn’t feel overcrowded, making it a great spot for casual meetups with friends or family.

The Food

The menu at bb.q Chicken is extensive, featuring a wide range of fried chicken flavours and other Korean dishes. Here’s what we tried:

Golden Fried Bone-In (9-pcs, NZ$26.00): This is the classic Korean fried chicken—juicy and tender on the inside, with a light, crispy exterior. Served with pickled radish, it’s the perfect way to test the quality of their chicken. It did not disappoint.

UFO Chicken (18-pcs, NZ$66.90): This platter is a showstopper. You can choose many flavours, and we chose three, the Secret Sauce (sweet and tangy), Soy Garlic (savoury with a hint of garlic), and Cheesling (dusted with a sweet cheese blend). The chicken is served with a mixed cheese fondue for dipping, making it a fun and indulgent experience.

Rose’ Ddeok-Bokki (NZ$23.00): A creamy, less spicy version of the classic Korean rice cake dish. The rice cakes were fresh and chewy, and the rose sauce, topped with corn and parmesan cheese, added a rich, comforting flavour.

Bulgogi Black Ramyun (NZ$26.00): This dish was a standout. The noodles were coated in a rich, savoury black bean sauce, topped with tender beef bulgogi. It was hearty, flavourful, and deeply satisfying.

Kimchi Fried Rice (NZ$23.00): A simple yet delicious dish featuring kimchi fried rice served with scrambled egg. It was a great accompaniment to the fried chicken.

The Highlights

The Secret Sauce Chicken was my favourite. The sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, coating the crispy chicken beautifully. The Golden Fried Chicken was also a hit, with its buttery undertones and crunchy exterior. Everything was served piping hot, a testament to the freshness of the food.

The Service

The staff at bb.q Chicken were attentive and efficient, ensuring our orders were taken promptly and the food arrived quickly. Despite the restaurant being busy, the service remained smooth and friendly.

The Verdict

bb.q Chicken is a fantastic addition to Auckland’s dining scene, offering some of the best Korean fried chicken I’ve had in the city. The variety of flavours, generous portions, and lively atmosphere make it a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Korean cuisine. Whether you’re a fried chicken enthusiast or just looking to try something new, bb.q Chicken is sure to impress.

There’s a bb.q Chicken location nearby me; I didn’t realize it was so widespread! Great to know that they’re still putting out such quality dishes, which is increasingly difficult as a chain expands.
