Karangahape Road, or K Road as it’s affectionately known, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. Once a gritty, slightly seedy strip, it’s now a vibrant dining precinct filled with chic eateries, wine bars, and cocktail lounges. Among these, Atelier stands out as a French-inspired haven offering tapas, wines, and cocktails in a stylish, relaxed setting. My wife and I recently celebrated a special occasion here, and it was an experience worth savouring.
The Ambiance
Atelier occupies a space that once housed an old post office, the one I always used to visit for my TradeMe sold item shipments, and the transformation is nothing short of stunning. The interior is airy, modern, and effortlessly chic, with an open layout that invites you to unwind. On the warm summer evening we visited, the doors were flung open, and the tables spilled out onto the footpath, creating a lively yet intimate atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a romantic date or a casual catch-up with friends, Atelier’s vibe is perfect.
The Food
We opted for the Trust the Chef Selection (NZ$75 per person), a degustation-style menu that showcased the best of what Atelier has to offer. Here’s what we enjoyed:

Pain de Campagne from Fort Greene: Served with three types of artisan butter—brown, rosemary, and black garlic. The bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, and the infused butters were divine.

Peanut Spread, Kumara Crisps, Fenugreek Chilli Oil: A playful dish with a delightful mix of textures and flavours. The peanut spread paired beautifully with the crispy kumara chips.

Wild Pork Croquettes, Raclette Cheese, Black Garlic Miso: Warm, cheesy, and packed with umami, these croquettes were a standout.

NZ Angus Beef Tartare, Crostini, Pickled Onions, Marrow Aioli: This dish won over even my wife, who’s usually not a fan of beef tartare. The flavours were balanced, and the texture was perfect.

Ratatouille Traditionnelle, Melted Campagnier Cheese: A comforting, slightly acidic dish that complemented the tartare beautifully.

Smoked Trevally Rillettes, Salmon Caviar, Cornichons: A personal favourite, the rillettes were addictive and packed with flavour. Reminds me of the rillettes that we tried in Rhu.

Market Fish (Tuna), Saffron Beurre Blanc, Sauce Vierge: The tuna was lean and well-cooked, with the beurre blanc adding a luxurious touch.

Truffle Potato Fingers, Parmesan, Aioli: Crispy, cheesy, and earthy, these were a fun and indulgent treat.

Dessert du Jour: A strawberry pecan tart with cream, rich and creamy without being heavy.

Le Mille-feuille, Salted Butter Caramel, Chantilly: A perfect balance of sweet and salty, this dessert was a delightful end to the meal.
The Drinks
Atelier’s drinks menu is extensive, with an impressive selection of wines, cocktails, and beers. We tried the Sawmill Pilsner, Foret Noire (a decadent espresso cocktail), and a Spritz Bellini, all of which were excellent. The wine list, featuring both New Zealand and French options, is a highlight for any wine enthusiast.
The Service
The staff at Atelier were exceptional—friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about the food and drinks they serve. They made us feel welcome and ensured our dining experience was seamless.
Final Thoughts
Atelier is a gem on K Road, offering a perfect blend of French-inspired cuisine, exceptional drinks, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a memorable meal, Atelier delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended!

Wow this place is fancy! You had me at truffle fries, but then I saw the rest of the items. This would be a favorite stop for special occasions!
Stunning! The amount of skill and artistry on display on each plate is just next level.
