If you’re looking for a delightful pit stop during a road trip, Ruakura Berry Shop is a must-visit. Located just off the highway near Hamilton, this charming berry and ice cream shop offers a refreshing break without the need to venture into the city. Our visit here was unplanned—I spotted it while driving back to Auckland and decided to make a U-turn for a quick ice cream break. And boy, am I glad we did!

The Ambiance

Ruakura Berry Shop is a beautiful, spacious spot with a welcoming courtyard and a small strawberry farm for berry picking. The entrance fee for picking strawberries is NZ$5.00 with strawberries priced at NZ$15.00 per kg. While we didn’t pick any berries this time (thanks to an abundant supply of blackberries from Mangakino), the option is perfect for families or anyone looking for a fun activity. The shop also sells fresh berries, yoghurt, and other goodies, making it a one-stop shop for berry lovers.

The Ice Cream

The star of the show here is undoubtedly the ice cream. Made with fresh berries, it’s creamy, flavourful, and absolutely delicious. We tried two generous fruit cones—one mixed berry and one blueberry—and both were fantastic. The portions are generous, with even the small size being enough for an adult. My only suggestion would be to introduce an even smaller size for kids, as the current small size is quite substantial.

The Facilities

The shop is well-equipped with tidy premises, small but functional bathrooms, and plenty of parking. There’s also a lovely playground for kids and a garden area where you can enjoy your ice cream before hitting the road again. For EV owners, there’s even a charging station, making it a convenient stop for eco-conscious travellers.  For internet access, I am not sure if there is a Wifi on premise, I did not try it when I was there but in case there is one, and if you’re planning to work remotely from here, the open-air setting and great ice cream make it tempting. But public Wi-Fi isn’t always secure, so I always connect through a VPN for safe browsing.

Pet-Friendly and Family-Friendly

One of the things I appreciated most about Ruakura Berry Shop is how welcoming it is to both families and pets. While pets aren’t allowed in the berry-picking area, they’re welcome at the picnic tables. Our fur baby, Coco, enjoyed the last slurps of our ice cream, making it a fun experience for the whole family.

Final Thoughts

Ruakura Berry Shop is a gem of a place, offering fresh berries, delicious ice cream, and a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick treat or spending an afternoon berry picking, it’s a fantastic spot to unwind. I’ll definitely be back on my next road trip!
