If you’re looking for a dog-friendly café with stunning harbour views, Fabric Cafe Bistro in Hobsonville Point is worth a visit. As a regular walker of our fur baby, Coco, around the area, I appreciate how welcoming this place is to pets. It’s one of the few spots in the area where you can enjoy a meal while your pooch lounges beside you. While this was our third visit, it was the first time I took the liberty of snapping some photos to share the experience.
The Ambiance
Fabric Cafe Bistro is a bustling spot in Hobsonville Point, and it’s easy to see why. The café offers plenty of seating, both indoors and outdoors, with umbrellas to shield you from the sun or rain. The views of the harbour are gorgeous, making it an ideal location for a relaxed meal. Despite its popularity, the turnover is quick, so you’re likely to find a table even during busy times. However, I’ve noticed that the service can be slow, especially during late lunch hours. On one occasion, we were told there would be a 45-minute wait, which led us to dine elsewhere.
The Food
The menu at Fabric changes frequently, and during our three visits, I’ve noticed a variety of dishes on offer. Here’s what we tried during our last visit:
Beef Short Rib (NZ$29.00): This dish was a standout. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, served with creamy polenta and smoked onions in a sherry sauce. The combination of flavours was divine, and the polenta had a smooth, luxurious texture.
Snapper (NZ$29.00): Perfectly cooked with a nice crust, the snapper was paired with cracked farro, chard, and a Mediterranean salsa. It was light, fresh, and packed with flavour.
Prawn and Crab Tortellini (NZ$29.00): My personal favourite, this dish had complex flavours with a spicy kick from the XO sauce and fermented chilli butter. The only downside was the portion size – I could have easily eaten more!
French Fries (NZ$13.00): While delicious, the sides felt a bit pricey for what you get. Still, the fries were crispy and well-seasoned.
The Coffee
The coffee at Fabric is consistently good. Whether you’re a flat white fan or prefer a long black, you won’t be disappointed. It’s the perfect accompaniment to their casual café-style menu.
The Service
While the place itself is lovely, the service can be hit or miss. During our weekend visit, we noticed that the waitstaff were mostly young women of school age, likely working part-time. Unfortunately, they came across as quite unwelcoming (emotionless and without a smile), which contrasted with the otherwise pleasant atmosphere. On a weekday, the staff might be different, but this was our experience during the weekend.
Final Thoughts
Fabric Cafe Bistro is a lovely spot for a sunny day, offering great food, fantastic coffee, and a dog-friendly atmosphere. However, the service can be hit or miss, and the prices are on the higher side. If you’re in Hobsonville and don’t mind a bit of a wait, it’s worth stopping by – especially if you have your furry friend in tow.
