On a recent trip to California, we found ourselves diving into the quintessential American fast-food experience, a journey that was as much about nostalgia as it was about discovery. Living in New Zealand, where many of these iconic chains are either absent or offer vastly different menus, we couldn’t resist the allure of sampling the diverse fast-food scene the U.S. is renowned for. Here’s a glimpse of our whirlwind culinary tour:

Domino’s

While Domino’s is a familiar name in New Zealand, the U.S. version feels like a different beast altogether. The sheer variety of toppings, crust styles, and specialty pizzas was mind-boggling. We tried the Meatzilla pizza, which was loaded with hearty toppings that satisfied every carnivorous craving. It was indulgent and packed with flavour, a true highlight of the trip.

Beyond the pizzas, we couldn’t resist their Honey Barbecue Wings. Sticky, sweet, and perfectly cooked, they were a delightful addition to our meal. These offerings made us realise how much we’re missing out on back home, and we couldn’t help but wish for these options to make their way to New Zealand.

Panda Express

This chain was a revelation! Known for its quick and flavourful American-Chinese dishes, Panda Express was a stop we’d been looking forward to. From the famous Orange Chicken to the Beijing Beef, every bite was a burst of bold, sweet, and savoury flavours. The portions were generous, and the food came out piping hot and fresh, adding to the overall experience.

We also loved how accessible and consistent Panda Express was, with locations seemingly everywhere we turned. It’s no wonder it’s such a beloved chain in the U.S. We couldn’t help but wish for a branch back home to share these delightful dishes with our friends and family.

Chipotle

Customisable burritos, bowls, and tacos? Yes, please! Chipotle was a game-changer for us, offering fresh ingredients and bold Mexican-inspired flavours. The ability to tailor every detail of your meal felt novel and exciting. From the perfectly spiced chicken to the zesty guacamole, every component was a treat.

What stood out most was the focus on fresh, quality ingredients. Chipotle felt like a healthier fast-food option without sacrificing flavour. It’s the kind of place you’d happily visit multiple times to try different combinations. We left feeling satisfied and inspired to recreate some of these dishes at home.

Auntie Anne’s

These warm, soft pretzels were a delightful treat. Whether savoury with cheese or sweet with cinnamon sugar, each bite was heavenly. The smell alone was enough to draw us in, and the freshly baked texture was perfection. It felt like the perfect snack to enjoy while exploring.

The variety of dipping sauces added another layer of indulgence to the experience. From creamy cheese dips to sweet icing, there was something for everyone. The idea of freshly baked pretzels as a fast-food option felt so different and indulgent compared to anything we’ve tried in New Zealand.

Cinnabon

The sweet aroma of Cinnabon greeted us long before we even saw the store. Their classic cinnamon rolls, dripping with frosting, were as decadent as they were addictive. It’s the kind of indulgence that’s worth every calorie and leaves you craving more.

We also tried their MiniBons, a smaller version of their signature rolls. These were perfect for sharing and just as satisfying. The balance of sweet cinnamon filling and cream cheese frosting was spot-on, making this a standout treat of our trip.

Wendy’s

While Wendy’s exists in New Zealand, the U.S. menu offered so much more. We were amazed by the unlimited drink vending machine with over 100 choices—a far cry from the fewer options we have back home. The sheer novelty of being able to mix and match drinks was a fun experience in itself.

We tried the Baconator Fries, which were indulgent and cheesy, and their Saucy Nuggs, which were perfectly coated and packed with flavour. It was like experiencing the brand for the first time, and we left with a newfound appreciation for Wendy’s.

Popeyes

Known for its crispy fried chicken and buttery biscuits, Popeyes was a feast. While the offerings are mostly the same as what’s available in New Zealand, we couldn’t resist trying it just to compare. The spicy chicken sandwich lived up to the hype, delivering a perfect balance of heat and crunch.

And those biscuits? Absolutely unforgettable. They were rich, buttery, and a perfect accompaniment to the chicken. It’s a shame we can’t grab a box back home, as Popeyes has a way of elevating fast food to comfort food perfection.

Jollibee

A taste of the Philippines in the U.S., Jollibee’s menu was a fun mix of sweet and savoury. The Chickenjoy lived up to its name, offering crispy, juicy chicken that was utterly satisfying. It was a taste of home for Filipinos abroad, and a delightful discovery for us.

The unique spaghetti with its sweet sauce and hot dogs was a surprising delight. It’s a playful take on a classic dish, and we appreciated the creativity and cultural flair it brought to our meal. Jollibee was a standout for its cheerful vibe and bold flavours.

Chowking

Another Filipino gem, Chowking was a lovely surprise. Their Lauriat meal sets, complete with rice, noodles, and siomai, were comforting and satisfying. The variety on one plate made it feel like a complete meal that hit all the right notes.

The halo-halo, a classic Filipino dessert, was a refreshing way to end the meal. Packed with crushed ice, sweet beans, and colourful toppings, it was a textural and flavourful adventure in every bite. Chowking offered a unique and memorable fast-food experience that we’d love to see in New Zealand.

The Takeaway

What struck us most during our fast-food exploration was how different these experiences felt compared to what we’re used to in New Zealand. Even familiar names like Domino’s and Wendy’s offered unique menus that made us feel like kids in a candy store. For chains like Panda Express, Popeyes, and Jollibee, which we don’t have back home, each bite was an exciting discovery.

Travelling often opens up new culinary horizons, and our California trip certainly did just that. Whether it’s indulging in a cinnamon roll at Cinnabon, enjoying a spicy chicken sandwich at Popeyes, or building the perfect burrito at Chipotle, these fast-food experiences made our trip even more memorable. Now, if only we could bring some of these flavours back to New Zealand!
