Sometimes, the best dining experiences come from unplanned discoveries, and that’s exactly what happened on our last day in California. After a relaxing walk around Manhattan Village mall, we stumbled upon Dan Modern Chinese—a sleek, modern spot that immediately caught our attention. With time to spare before heading to LAX, we decided to give it a try. What followed was a memorable dining experience filled with fresh flavours, impeccable service, and a touch of culinary artistry.

First Impressions

We arrived right as the restaurant opened at 11 a.m. The manager greeted us warmly, setting a tone of genuine hospitality that lasted throughout the meal. The interior was impressive—bright, airy, and pristinely clean. The design felt contemporary and upscale, reminiscent of Din Tai Fung but with a unique personality. Despite its modern appeal, the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, perfect for a casual yet elevated dining experience.

The Dishes We Tried

Dan Modern Chinese offers a refined take on classic Chinese cuisine, with a focus on handmade dishes and fresh ingredients. Here’s what we ordered:

Pork & Shrimp Handmade Dumplings (5 pcs, $10.75): Pan-fried for a slight crispy texture, these dumplings were a standout. The filling was flavourful, and the pan-frying added a delightful crunch. For those seeking an even crispier experience, the crispy-bottom option is worth the 30-minute wait.

Short Rib Dan Mein ($22.25): This dish featured handmade thick noodles, snow pea leaves, shiitake mushrooms, and a garlic sauce. The noodles stole the show—thick, chewy, and infused with an intense wok hei (smoky) flavour. The slight sweetness of the sauce added depth, making this a must-try.

Shrimp with Crab Sauce ($21.00): My personal favourite! The dish was generously packed with real crab meat, paired with shrimp in a delicate garlic and ginger sauce. Every bite was luxurious and satisfying, showcasing the restaurant’s attention to detail.

What Stood Out

While the portions were smaller and prices higher than traditional Chinese restaurants, the elevated approach to preparation made up for it. Each dish was served family-style, allowing us to share and savour the variety of flavours. The waitstaff was attentive and knowledgeable, offering helpful suggestions and insights into the menu.

Note: This trip took place before the devastating January 2025 California Wildfires. It breaks my heart to see what has unfolded earlier this year. We are profoundly saddened by the impact these wildfires have had on your community. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones during this incredibly challenging period.
