Esko’s Solvang Cafe (Solvang, California, United States)

Stopped by a cute café in Solvang for some pastries and coffee, but it didn’t live up to the hype. At least the patio had good vibes! #EskosSolvangCafe.

On our recent visit to Solvang, we stopped by Esko’s Solvang Cafe, a small café that offers a variety of cakes, pastries, ice cream, and coffee. The charming café stood out as it was one of the few places still open when most other spots in town had already closed for the day. It’s a quaint bakery and café, with a takeout-only setup and small tables on the patio, offering a cute outdoor space to sit in the shade while enjoying a sweet treat or coffee.

Esko’s seemed like a promising stop, especially with its inviting food cabinets full of colourful cakes, cannoli, cookies, and pastries. They all looked gorgeous, but the prices did give us a bit of pause. For example, a slice of cake or a cannoli will set you back around US$10.00, while other pastries start at US$6.50 and go up to nearly US$10.00. Given that steep pricing, we were curious to see if the taste matched the visual appeal.

We decided to try a couple of their famous Danish pastries, a Nutella cannoli, and some ice cream macarons. With the warm weather, we hoped the macarons would be a refreshing treat. However, our expectations were quickly tempered. The macaron, while aesthetically pleasing, was overly sweet, leaving us wanting more balance in flavour.

As for the Danish pastry, which we expected to be light and flaky, it was quite disappointing. The texture felt “flat,” and the pastry lacked the buttery layers and flakiness that make Danish pastries so special. To be honest, the free pastries we got at our hotel were far better. At US$7.00 a piece, this felt like a bit of a letdown.

I found it odd that a café in Solvang, a town known for its Danish charm and heritage, didn’t seem to offer many authentic Danish treats. For example, we didn’t spot any kringles or wienerbrød, which are staples in Danish bakeries. Instead, the selection here felt more like what you’d find in a general pastry shop.

One thing I did enjoy about Esko’s was its laid-back outdoor seating area. The small tables on the patio gave it a quirky and relaxed feel. It was a pleasant spot to unwind, but the food just didn’t hit the mark for us. The iced coffee we ordered lacked any real coffee flavour and tasted more like milk, which was another disappointment. At US$6.00 for a 20oz cup, I expected something much better.

In terms of quality, I couldn’t help but feel like a lot of the pastries might have been pre-made or bought elsewhere, potentially even from somewhere like Costco. They just didn’t have the freshness or craftsmanship I expect from a café that charges this much.

Though the staff were friendly and helpful, I can’t say this would be a place I’d return to or recommend, especially with so many other wonderful options in Solvang. Overall, the experience fell short of the high expectations we had based on the beautiful display of treats. Sometimes, looks can be deceiving, and unfortunately, this was one of those times.
