Our California road trip kicked off with a visit to Solvang, a charming Danish-inspired town in the Santa Ynez Valley. Solvang is a little slice of Denmark nestled in California, with half-timbered buildings, windmills, and replicas of Danish landmarks giving it a distinct cultural flair. The town, founded in 1911 by Danish-American educators, initially had a more Californian appearance, but after World War II, the community embraced its Danish roots, especially after a 1947 article in the Saturday Evening Post drew attention to its heritage. Today, it’s a vibrant destination for those looking to experience a taste of Denmark without leaving the U.S.

Our first stop here was the iconic Danish Mill Bakery Inc., an establishment that has been serving traditional Danish pastries since 1960. As soon as we stepped inside, we felt a sense of familiarity, having visited Denmark not too long ago on a European vacation. The bakery’s cozy ambiance and rich history made us feel as though we were back in Copenhagen.

A Legacy of Danish Craftsmanship

Danish Mill Bakery’s roots go back to Copenhagen itself, where Arvid Petersen, the founder, began his journey as a baker in 1931. After working for one of the finest bakeries in Copenhagen, even supplying baked goods for King Christian X of Denmark, Arvid moved to the U.S. in 1957 and opened the bakery in Solvang in 1960. Today, the legacy continues under Danish Pastry Chef Henrik Gram, who also hails from Copenhagen and has more than 40 years of experience. Chef Gram’s resume includes baking for none other than Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, so we were excited to see if these pastries could live up to their royal reputation.

A Danish Delight in Every Bite

Walking into Danish Mill Bakery, we were greeted by a vast selection of pastries—each one looking better than the last. From buttery croissants to delicate Danish cookies, everything felt authentic. The flaky, golden crusts of the pastries reminded us of the ones we had in Denmark, with layers so delicate that they practically melted in your mouth.

We couldn’t resist starting with a selection of traditional Danish pastries, paired with a cup of hot coffee. The pastries were incredibly fresh, with a soft, buttery inside and a perfectly crisp outer layer. It was clear that the ingredients were top-notch, and each bite transported us back to the streets of Copenhagen. We sat outside to enjoy our treats, as the bakery offers outdoor seating free of charge. It was the perfect way to take in the Solvang vibe.

The Danish Mill Bakery stood out for its variety and flavour, especially compared to other bakeries in the area. Even though many of the local hotels and inns offer complimentary Danish pastries, there was no comparison to what we enjoyed here. The freshness and attention to detail were unparalleled.

In addition to the wide selection of pastries, the bakery also offers an assortment of other baked goods. We were especially intrigued by the Aebleskiver mix they sell, so you can bring a bit of Danish tradition into your home. They also have animated baker figures in the front window, which are a fun touch, especially for families.

While the food was undeniably delicious, there was a slight hiccup with the service—it was friendly but could use some improvement in terms of attentiveness. Still, the joyous atmosphere of the bakery made up for it, and the experience overall was fantastic.
