Cocomo, nestled on Lorne Street, Auckland, seems to be the city’s newest coconut-themed drink and dessert hotspot, riding on the wave started by places like Coconut Factory. Specializing in fresh coconut drinks with unique twists, Cocomo’s menu certainly catches your attention with intriguing options like cloud coconut drinks topped with creamy cheese foam. From pistachio to purple yam and matcha, their flavours sound like a dream for anyone craving something new. But after finally visiting, I’m left asking: is it all hype?
When I first walked into Cocomo, I’ll admit my expectations were low. You know how social media influencers can sometimes overhype places that end up being average? I had a gut feeling this might be one of those situations. A friend dragged me along, eager to try their cloud coconut drinks. I reluctantly went along, ready for a potentially overpriced, underwhelming experience.

Now, to be fair, the pistachio cloud coconut (NZ$12.80) was a pleasant surprise and easily the best of the bunch. The natural sweetness paired with the nutty pistachio flavour was delicious, and the coconut pieces added a nice texture. I’d rate it an 8/10. It’s just the right balance between creamy and refreshing, with real pistachio bits that give it that extra edge.
Unfortunately, the other drinks didn’t hold up as well. The matcha cloud coconut (NZ$12.80) was the biggest disappointment. Despite their attempt to market it as “Shizuoka matcha,” it was easy to tell that the quality was far from premium. The dull olive colour should’ve been a giveaway. A high-quality matcha should be a bright, vibrant green, but this one lacked that richness and mixing it with cream and cheese foam only made it worse. I’d give it a 6/10 at best.
Then came the taro cloud coconut (NZ$11.80), which scored even lower with me at a 5/10. It tasted like coconut cream you’d grab from the supermarket, with barely a hint of taro. For a flavour that’s supposed to be bold, it really fell flat.
On the positive side, Cocomo’s ambiance is inviting. The shop is big, tidy, and the atmosphere is bright and cheerful, with pop music playing in the background. The staff were also friendly, serving with a smile, which made the experience more enjoyable. But while the décor looks impressive at first glance, up close, it felt more like IKEA-level quality. Some of the tables were unstable and wobbly, which didn’t quite match the premium price tag.

One thing that I found quite frustrating was their menu setup. There’s only one menu displayed, right at the front of the counter. So, if you’re new like me, you have to awkwardly walk to the front of the line to check the options and then step back to join the queue again. It would’ve been helpful to have more menus around the store, especially given how unique their drinks are.
Now, let’s talk about pricing—because that’s really the elephant in the room here. Nearly NZ$13.00 for a drink that’s packed with ice and comes in a regular-sized cup? That’s hard to justify, especially when places like Tsujiri offer higher-quality matcha for a similar price, and yes you can taste the big difference. During their opening week, Cocomo offered a 2-for-1 deal, which made it a decent value, but at full price, I just can’t see myself coming back anytime soon.

Cocomo is, ultimately, a fancy coconut water dessert place. It’s got the look, the branding, and the “Instagrammable” appeal. But if the prices were closer to NZ$7.00, I think I’d be much more impressed. At the end of the day, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much by skipping a second visit. It’s pretty, it’s trendy, but is it really worth the hype? For me, not quite.

We all know all about those overhyped places from social media…or rather overhyped “viral” recipes that go around on TikTok. It’s become a joke in our house that TikTok recipes are always (always!) a massive fail. Sad to see that Cocomos falls into the same category. It’ll probably enjoy a quick burst but then slowly fade away…unless they make some changes of course.
