When it comes to Malaysian food in Auckland, we’re spoiled for choice. But if you ask us about our favourite spot, Petaling Malaysian Restaurant in Mount Eden has quickly climbed to the top of our list. This restaurant, though relatively new, has a way of transporting you straight to the streets of Malaysia with every bite. Having lived in Malaysia in the early 2000s, this place brought back so many memories of the flavours we loved back then.
Petaling may not have been around as long as some other Malaysian eateries in Auckland, and it might not claim the best version of every street-food favourite, but what it does offer is consistency across the board. Each dish is saucy, tasty, and expertly executed, bursting with the hot, bold, and salty flavours that define Malaysian cuisine.

One of the standout dishes we tried was the Hainanese Chicken on Rice (NZ$20.90). This dish features poached chicken, cooked gently to retain its tenderness and juiciness. The rice, infused with chicken fat, garlic, and ginger, is cooked in the broth from poaching the chicken, making it incredibly fragrant and flavourful. What surprised me most was the portion size — instead of a few slices, as you might find elsewhere, Petaling serves a generous amount of chicken, accompanied by a spicy chili sauce that adds a whole new layer of flavour. It’s definitely an enjoyable treat, complete with fresh veggies on the side.

Another highlight was the Nasi Lemak with Rendang Beef (NZ$22.90). The rice, rich with coconut flavour, pairs perfectly with the slow-cooked beef rendang, which is tender and packed with a blend of spices like lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger, and chilies. This dish is a must-try for anyone longing for a taste of Malaysia.

And then there’s the Wat Tan Hor (NZ$20.90), a dish that truly deserves a double thumbs up. The flat rice noodles are wok-fried to achieve that slightly charred flavour, known as “wok hei,” before being smothered in a rich, silky egg gravy made from chicken stock, eggs, and seasonings. Topped with fish cakes, prawns, vegetables, and crispy shallots, this dish was both delicious and comforting.
The service at Petaling is particularly commendable. The staff is attentive, the prices are reasonable given the generous portions, and the food arrives quickly after ordering. Our dining experience here was nothing short of amazing, with perfect service, food, and atmosphere all around.

I shouldn’t have read this before dinner. I’m absolutely ravenous now! I would do terrible things for that silky noodle soup especially.
