We don’t often find ourselves dining at Thai restaurants—not because we don’t enjoy the cuisine, but because we usually lean towards Malaysian, Chinese, Korean, or Japanese when we eat out. However, one lazy evening when both my wife and I were too tired to cook and our daughter wasn’t home, we decided to venture out for dinner. A quick Google search led us to Sai Rung Thai Restaurant in Rosedale, a spot we hadn’t visited before. To our surprise, this tucked-away location housed several restaurants, mostly Korean.
It’s no secret that Kiwis have a fondness for Thai food. The vibrant combination of savory, spicy, sour, salty, and sweet flavours in a single dish appeals to many, with the sweetness often taking centre stage. Sai Rung Thai delivers on this front, offering an extensive range of authentic traditional Thai dishes. Though we didn’t sample the full menu, the dishes we tried left a strong impression.

We started with the Mixed Appetizer (6pcs, NZ$13.80)—a chef’s selection that included a spring roll, chicken satay, chicken triangle, curry puff, money bags, and a fish cake. Each item was tasty, but the money bags and chicken satay stood out as our favourites.
Next up was the Chicken Pad Thai (NZ$23.90), a classic stir-fried rice noodle dish with egg, bean sprouts, Pad Thai sauce, and crushed peanuts. The noodles were perfectly cooked—still bouncy and full of texture without falling apart like you sometimes find elsewhere. The flavours were well-balanced, making it a satisfying choice.

We also tried the Pork Num Tok (NZ$24.90), a dish typically featuring grilled meat with herbs, mint, ground roasted rice, lemon juice, and fish sauce. While I expected the meat to be grilled, it seemed more boiled, lacking that signature charred flavour that complements this salad. The meat was a bit tough, but the dish was still flavourful overall.

The restaurant itself has a warm and cozy atmosphere, with a spacious and immaculate interior. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, adding to the experience. With excellent service, a large and comfortable setting, and a menu full of enticing options, Sai Rung Thai is a great spot for those days when you want a break from the usual dining routine.
