If you’re craving authentic Malaysian food without breaking the bank, Langkawi Malaysian Restaurant on Kitchener Road, Milford, Auckland, is a must-visit. For just NZ$16.99, you can enjoy a meal that includes rice, a main dish, prawn wontons, and a sweet dessert. Finding such value, especially in Milford, is quite rare.
We visited this charming spot several months ago when they were offering their monthly special. While the exact dishes might change, the price and quality will probably remain the same, making it a fantastic deal. During our visit, they had two special sets, and we decided to try both.
First up was the Malaysian Braised Pork Dry Noodle. This dish featured melt-in-your-mouth pork belly, wood ear fungus cooked to a similar tender texture, and crispy pork fat bits that burst with flavour. All of this was served over perfectly cooked egg noodles, drenched in a luscious sweet and savoury sauce. It was a rich, fatty delight, offering a refreshing change from the usual spicy Malaysian dishes.
The second set was the Asam Prawn Cuttlefish with Rice. This dish included three large tiger prawns, cuttlefish, and okra, all swimming in a spicy-sour sauce that was absolutely addictive. The sauce was perfectly spiced with hints of sweetness, creating a very savoury and satisfying meal.
Both sets came with two crunchy prawn wontons, served with sweet chilli sauce. These wontons were generously filled and provided a delightful crunch that complemented the main dishes perfectly.
To round off the meal, we enjoyed a sweet mung bean soup dessert. This dessert was just sweet enough to balance the savouriness of the main courses, making it a perfect ending to our meal.
The meals at Langkawi Malaysian Restaurant are not only delicious but also offer excellent value for money. The food is undoubtedly authentic, which brought back fond memories of my time living in Malaysia for four years. The dishes transported me back to the bustling open-air food courts in SS2, Petaling Jaya.
The service was friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience. While the restaurant is a bit dark and cramped, it adds to the cosy, authentic feel of the place. It can get very busy, so it’s advisable to book in advance. Fortunately, we visited during a late lunch, so we didn’t have to wait in line.
