The first store specializing in dorayaki has just opened in Newmarket, and it’s creating quite a buzz. In case you’re unfamiliar, dorayaki is a popular Japanese treat consisting of two small, round handmade pancakes sandwiched together with a filling in the middle. At Guka Dorayaki, they currently offer six flavour variants, and out of the two flavours I tried, my favourites are the Oreo Cheese and Matcha Red Bean.
Oreo Cheese – Crushed Oreo cookies paired with cheese cream offer a savory taste sensation. The combination of cheese fragrance and creaminess creates a delightful harmony. If you enjoy savory flavours, this one is for you.
Matcha Red Bean – This is the classic flavour of dorayaki, combining the aroma of Uji matcha with soft and glutinous red beans. Sweet but not greasy, it’s a must-try for matcha lovers. The matcha red bean combines a strong, bitter matcha flavour with sweet pancakes.
The pancakes are super fluffy, and the filling is generous but not too sweet, which I prefer. Watching them being made is quite satisfying. Each dorayaki is neatly presented in individual packaging, which can be effortlessly torn open from the middle. They are served cold, which is not typical of dorayaki, as they refrigerate them to prevent the filling from melting. I actually enjoyed the cold version more than the warm ones; the amazing cream texture was perfect at this temperature! Priced at $8 to $9, it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it.
