If you’re craving authentic Japanese udon in Auckland, look no further than Udon Works in Mount Eden. This gem, adorned with fronds of dried kombu (kelp) on its walls, places rausu kombu at the heart of its menu. Sourced from the cold waters off Rausu in Hokkaido, Japan, this ‘King of kombu’ is renowned for its rich mineral content and exceptional quality, making the dashi broth at Udon Works both rich and fragrant.
The menu features a variety of hot and cold udon dishes, with noodles custom-made from Australian wheat, the same wheat preferred for udon-making in Japan. Each broth is a meticulous blend of kombu dashi, bonito flakes, dried sardines, and seven types of soy sauce, creating a perfect harmony of flavours.
While udon is the star, Udon Works also offers donburi dishes, tempura, sashimi, and tataki, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The chef’s special menu is worth watching, with rotating dishes that keep the offerings fresh and exciting.
During our visit, we indulged in several of the chef’s specials:
Tonkotsu Shoyu Udon with Aburi Charshu (NZ$22.80), the pork, blow-torched to perfection in front of you, melts in your mouth. The broth is full of umami, and the noodles are perfectly bouncy and chewy.

Wagyu Sukiyaki Udon Hot Pot (NZ$32.80), the Wagyu beef, needing just a quick dip in the boiling broth, is tender and flavourful, making this dish a standout.
Prawn Tempura with Kake Udon (NZ$21.80), light, crispy tempura with decently sized prawns pairs beautifully with the clean, tasty broth. Five generous prawn portions make this a satisfying meal.
One bowl is more than enough, leaving us no room for dessert. Each dish at Udon Works is a perfect blend of presentation, flavour, and quality. The service is quick and friendly, adding to the delightful dining experience.

Visiting Udon Works feels like stepping into a humble noodle house in a Japanese city. The genuine quality of the dishes for the prices charged is unmatched in Auckland. Despite the small space and limited seating, the wait is worth it. Arrive early to secure your spot and enjoy the best udon in Auckland.

It seems like a small spot, but the food is right on. Love it! Now I’m craving shrimp tempura….haha.
I LOVE udon! I don’t understand why it doesn’t get a quarter of as much love as ramen. It’s even more impressive to nail that thick, chewy noodle texture. These all look so good!
