Nestled in the vibrant heart of Ponsonby, Mekong Baby stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Southeast Asian cuisine. My long-awaited visit to this iconic spot was a culmination of years of anticipation, finally realized with my family by my side.

Already an institution in Auckland’s hippest neighbourhood, Mekong Baby exudes an unmistakable charm that sets it apart from the myriad dining options along Ponsonby Road. Its buzzing dining room, complemented by a chic cocktail bar, creates an ambiance that is both inviting and dynamic. As we stepped inside, we were enveloped by the warmth of the space, its unique design paying homage to the rich cultural tapestry of Southeast Asia.

The menu, an eclectic fusion of traditional and contemporary dishes, promised a culinary journey like no other.

We kicked off our gastronomic adventure with the Soft-Shell Crab Bao Bun (NZ$28.00 for 2 pieces), a tantalizing blend of textures and flavours that left us craving for more. This dish was a symphony of crispy crab, Asian slaw, pickled cucumber, and chilli mayo, perfectly encapsulating the vibrant spirit of Southeast Asian Street food.

For our mains, we indulged in a symphony of tastes that danced on our palates. The Crispy Skinned Market Fish (NZ$37.00) was a revelation, its delicate snapper fish fillet with a really crispy outer crust adorned with sweet and sticky pork, pear, radish, and peanuts. The interplay of flavours, from the umami-rich pork to the refreshing crunch of pear, was a testament to the chef’s culinary prowess.

The Wok Fried Ramen Noodles (NZ$33.00) transported us to the bustling streets of Southeast Asia with its bold and aromatic profile. Infused with prawns, egg, chilli, shallots, bean sprouts, and peanuts, this dish was a celebration of bold flavours and contrasting textures. Not to forget the pronounced Wok Hei that made this dish even more close to our hearts.

However, it was the Red Beef Curry (NZ$38.00) that stole the show. Its succulent beef slices, bathed in a rich, aromatic broth and accompanied by eggplant and betel leaves, spoke volumes of the chef’s mastery. Each spoonful was a journey through layers of spice and complexity, the stickiness of that collagen intertwined by that meaty beef shank, leaving a lasting impression on our palates.

Paired with the Mekong Baby Roti Bread (NZ$8.00 for 2 pieces), a delightful marriage of crispiness and fluffiness, milky and slightly sweet, it was a culinary symphony that left us craving for more.

As we washed down our delectable meal with refreshing beverages, including the Mango Tango Mocktail (NZ$13.00), Hallertau Granny Smith Cider (NZ$13.00) and Mekong Baby Lager (NZ$11.00), we couldn’t help but marvel at the impeccable service and attention to detail that permeated every aspect of our dining experience.

Mekong Baby exceeded all expectations, offering not just a meal, but an unforgettable culinary journey that celebrated the essence of Southeast Asian cuisine. With its vibrant ambiance, impeccable service, and mouthwatering fare, it’s no wonder that Mekong Baby remains a cherished favourite among locals and visitors alike.
