My long-awaited visit to Gochu finally came to fruition, and it exceeded all expectations. Nestled within the vibrant surroundings of Commercial Bay, this hidden gem beckons with its enticing array of Korean delicacies. Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable dining experience:

Opting for the “Leave it to the Chef” (NZ$65.00) tasting menu proved to be a wise choice, offering a tantalizing journey through Gochu’s culinary repertoire in an affordable price (you wont get any tasting menu at that price here in Auckland). Each dish, meticulously crafted and thoughtfully presented, showcased the culinary prowess of the chefs. Here’s a detailed dive into the culinary treasures I uncovered during my visit:

Pork Belly Ssam, Leek Kimchi
Kicking off the tasting menu, the Pork Belly Ssam tantalized the palate with its rich umami flavours. The tender pork belly, paired with tangy leek kimchi, provided a perfect introduction to the culinary journey ahead.

Tuna Crudo, Chojang, Pickled Nashi
Despite my usual reservations about raw tuna, the Tuna Crudo at Gochu proved to be a revelation. Expertly prepared and bursting with flavour, the dish showcased a harmonious blend of textures and tastes, elevating raw tuna to new heights.

Fried Chicken Slider, Gochu Mayo, Korean Pickles
Simple yet irresistible, the Fried Chicken Slider captured the essence of Korean comfort food. The crispy chicken, coated in Gochu mayo and nestled between soft buns, offered a delightful interplay of textures and flavours.

Crispy Eggplant, Doenjang Glaze, Tofu Cream, Sesame
Among the standout dishes was the Crispy Eggplant, a culinary marvel that delighted the senses which reminds me of this Crisp Eggplant with Fish Fragrant Sauce I made before. With its perfectly crispy exterior and creamy eggplant filling, this dish exemplified the artistry and innovation that defines Gochu’s cuisine.

Charred Chicken, Gochujang, Comté Cheese, Leek Sauce with Rice
A personal favourite, the Charred Chicken exemplified Korean comfort food at its finest. The tender chicken, infused with smoky flavours and accompanied by a creamy cheese sauce, offered a satisfying burst of flavours with every bite.

Gochu Salad, Cos Lettuce, Asian Pear, Apple, Shallot Dressing
While the Gochu Salad provided a nice side salad, it lacked the complexity and depth of flavour found in the other dishes. Nevertheless, its crisp textures and vibrant flavours added a refreshing touch to the meal.

Watermelon Bingsoo, Makgeolli Syrup, Goji Berries, Caramelized Rice
The Watermelon Bingsoo was a revelation, offering a multi-layered sensory experience unlike any other dessert. With its refreshing watermelon base, complemented by a symphony of flavours and textures, this dessert left a lasting impression.

Gochu Milk Bun (NZ$15.00 each)
Not a part of the tasting menu but since this dish won the Best dish at the Metro Restaurant of the Year Awards 2021, we have to try it. A true culinary gem, the Gochu Milk Bun stole the show with its bold flavours and innovative presentation. Filled with spicy pork and kimchi, and served with a silky beurre blanc, this iconic dish exemplified the essence of Korean cuisine in every bite.

From the mouthwatering Pork Belly Ssam to the flavour-packed Tuna Crudo, each dish offered a symphony of flavours and textures that delighted the palate. Standout dishes like the Crispy Eggplant and Charred Chicken left a lasting impression, showcasing the perfect balance of bold flavours and innovative techniques.

A true culinary masterpiece, the Gochu Milk Bun deserves all the accolades it has received. Bursting with spicy pork and kimchi, and accompanied by a silky beurre blanc, this dish is a true testament to Gochu’s commitment to excellence. It’s no wonder it has become an Auckland icon, capturing the hearts and taste buds of diners across the city.

Beyond the delectable dishes, the ambiance at Gochu is unparalleled. Set against the backdrop of stunning waterfront views, the restaurant offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The attentive staff, well-versed in the menu offerings, further enhance the dining experience, ensuring every guest feels welcome and pampered.

My dining experience at Gochu was nothing short of extraordinary. From the innovative dishes to the impeccable service, every aspect of the meal surpassed my expectations. Whether you’re a Korean cuisine enthusiast or simply seeking a memorable dining experience, Gochu is sure to impress.
