Driven by a craving for a Korean Backbone stew, my wife and I found ourselves drawn to Bando, a newly established Korean restaurant nestled in the heart of Takapuna. Despite the quiet ambiance that greeted us on a bustling Saturday night, we were eager to delve into the culinary treasures that awaited us.

Stepping into Bando, we were greeted by a spacious and inviting interior, adorned with dark decor that set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. Despite the absence of a bustling crowd, we remained optimistic, ready to embark on a culinary journey through the flavours of Korea.

Opting to sample a selection of Bando’s signature dishes, we settled on the Pork Back-Bone Hot Pot , (NZ$52.00), a thick soup made of pig backbones, potato, green cabbage leaves (ugeoji), crushed perilla seeds, spring onions, and garlic; and the Seafood & Vegetable Korean Pancake (NZ$29.00), julienned, tender young green onion stems folded into a flour batter with squid, clam meat, and oysters and pan-fried. Served with a soy vinaigrette dipping sauce. As the generous portions arrived at our table, we marvelled at the abundance of flavours and textures that awaited us.

Despite my wife’s aversion to spicy food, my craving for the Pork Back-Bone Hot Pot compelled us to request a milder version. Although the initial serving still proved too spicy for her palate, the attentive staff promptly accommodated our request, delivering a perfectly balanced rendition that satisfied both our tastes.

The Pork Back-Bone Hot Pot, infused with a rich medley of flavours, captivated our senses from the first spoonful. Despite the slightly tougher texture of the meat compared to what we tried on other Korean restaurant specially the ones at Dokdo, the robust broth and generous portion of backbones ensured a satisfying dining experience.

Meanwhile, the Seafood & Vegetable Korean Pancake proved to be a hearty and indulgent treat, boasting an abundance of seafood and vegetables encased in a thick, flavourful batter. While not the most flavourful rendition we’ve encountered, the generous portions more than made up for any shortcomings.

As we savoured our meal, we couldn’t help but wonder about the lively atmosphere that Bando is said to exude during peak hours. With live music performances and a stage awaiting performers, it’s clear that Bando offers more than just a culinary experience – it’s a destination for entertainment and relaxation.

Our dining experience at Bando was marked by attentive service and generous portions. While some dishes may have fallen short of expectations, the overall experience left us eager to return and explore more of what Bando has to offer.
