Auckland’s culinary scene never ceases to surprise, especially when you’re accompanied by a furry friend. After an invigorating hike at the Waitakere Ranges, hunger struck, and with Coco, our lively Golden Retriever Border Collie Cross in tow, finding a dog-friendly eatery became paramount. A quick Google search led us to The Garden Shed nestled in Mt Eden, offering a haven for both humans and their canine companions.

Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly, and Coco received royal treatment with a refreshing bowl of water. True to its name, The Garden Shed boasts a charming rear garden area, providing a serene ambiance shielded from the midday sun by tasteful tarps. The tranquil vibe instantly captivated us.

Their menu showcases quintessential Kiwi brunch delights, ranging from hearty burgers to indulgent breakfast classics. While not our usual go-to, the options proved satisfying amidst our hunger pangs.

We opted for:

Moroccan Spiced Chicken Burger (NZ$27.90), the succulent chicken, infused with aromatic Moroccan spices, offered a tantalizing contrast to the crispy bacon and fresh, crunchy lettuce. The creamy aioli provided a delightful creaminess, while the steak-cut fries served as the perfect accompaniment, adding a satisfying crunch to every bite. Overall, a harmonious blend of textures and tastes that left us craving for more.

Curious Chook (NZ$27.90) boasted a promising combination of Cajun-spiced chicken, savory bacon, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, and creamy avocado, all nestled within toasted ciabatta bread. While the ingredients were fresh and well-prepared, we couldn’t help but wish for a bolder Cajun spice profile to elevate the dish further. Nevertheless, the generous serving of steak-cut fries added a comforting touch, making it a satisfying meal, nonetheless.

Gardener’s Veggie Breakfast (NZ$27.90) was a vegetarian delight that exceeded our expectations. The perfectly cooked rosti provided a crispy base for the medley of flavours that followed. The house-made beans, earthy mushrooms, and grilled halloumi were expertly seasoned, while the smashed avocado added a creamy richness. Topped with perfectly poached eggs and served alongside toasted sourdough, every element of this dish harmonized flawlessly, leaving us thoroughly impressed and satisfied.

Shed Beef Burger (NZ$27.90) was a hearty and indulgent treat. The thick beef patty, cooked to perfection, was juicy and flavourful, complemented by the melty cheese, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, and tangy pickles. The addition of a generous onion ring added a delightful crunch and depth of flavour. Sandwiched between a soft brioche bun, every bite was a symphony of textures and tastes, making it a standout dish worth savouring.

To complement our meals, I savoured a refreshing Sawmill Pilsner (NZ$13.90) and a zesty Lemon, Lime & Bitters (NZ$7.90), perfectly suited for the sunny weather.

The Garden Shed exudes a magical atmosphere akin to a hidden garden oasis. The attentive staff, though managing a full house, delivered impeccable service with a smile. The meticulously designed interior and enchanting garden décor contribute to the restaurant’s allure.

While the cuisine pleasantly surprised us, the prices lean toward the higher end. However, the extensive craft beer selection and the picturesque courtyard adorned with lush foliage make it a worthwhile indulgence.

In sum, The Garden Shed transcends the realm of typical Kiwi brunch spots, offering a delightful fusion of culinary excellence and serene ambiance. A must-visit for those seeking a memorable dining experience amidst nature’s embrace.

For dog lovers and food enthusiasts alike, The Garden Shed promises an enchanting rendezvous of flavours and tranquillity. Bring your furry friend along for a culinary escapade like no other!

  1. I love that you can bring your dog along! (Granted, we wouldn’t do that because we’d be dealing with our dogs the whole time…haha.) This place has such a fun vibe…and that burger looks absolutely fantastic!!
