On a day when the thought of cooking feels more like a daunting task than a joy, Takapuna beckoned with its promise of culinary exploration. Amidst the weariness from work stress, the allure of a simple meal and a break from the kitchen drew us out. As we strolled through the streets, serendipity led us to QMT Dumplings, a quaint eatery tucked away in the heart of Takapuna. Intrigued by its unassuming facade and spurred on by promising online reviews, we decided to venture into uncharted gastronomic territory. With so many dining options already explored in Takapuna, QMT Dumplings stood out as a beacon of novelty, beckoning us with the allure of new flavours and experiences.

Despite its name, which suggests a focus on dumplings, QMT Dumplings surprised us with a diverse menu featuring rice meals and other Chinese specialties. Opting to stray from the dumpling path, we ventured into a culinary journey of flavours with our selections.

The Chinese Braised Pork on Rice (NZ$16.00) immediately captured our attention, offering a delightful fusion of saucy adobo-like flavours with aromatic Chinese spices. It was a symphony of tastes that left us longing for more.

Next, the Mapo Tofu (NZ$16.00) on Rice presented a unique twist on the classic dish, veering away from the traditional spicy and numbing flavours to embrace a subtle, fermented black bean profile. While different, it still managed to intrigue our palates with its complexity.

The Beef Oyster Sauce with Vegetables on Rice (NZ$16.00) showcased simplicity done right, with tender beef bathed in a savory sauce complemented by perfectly cooked vegetables. While not groundbreaking, it satisfied our craving for a comforting home-cooked meal.

However, the Special Salty Chicken (NZ$12.00) left much to be desired. Despite its intriguing description, the dish fell short with overly bony chicken and a lacklustre flavour profile that failed to impress.

To round off our meal, we indulged in a classic Chinese Cucumber Salad, which, while enjoyable, offered nothing particularly memorable.

Service at QMT Dumplings was efficient, if somewhat lacking in warmth. Yet, in a no-frills eatery like this, the focus is rightfully on the food rather than elaborate service.

So, QMT Dumplings may not boast extravagance, but its humble offerings speak volumes. It’s a place where simplicity meets flavour, offering a taste of authentic Shanghai cuisine in the heart of Takapuna.

    That is surprising, I would have expected many more dumplings based on the name. The mapo tofu looks really good though, if unconventional.
