We stumbled upon Kikas Kitchen on a lazy Sunday, drawn in by the aroma of grilling meat and the promise of something authentically different. The Sunday menu, a concise celebration of Brazilian staples, presented us with a delicious conundrum: churrasco or feijoada, the national black bean stew? Unable to resist the allure of fire-kissed Flavors, we opted for two churrasco heroes – the Panceta na Cerveja (NZ$26.50) (pork belly marinated in beer, cumin, and rosemary) and Halloumi (NZ$28.00).

From the first sizzle on the charcoal grill, we knew we were in for a treat. The pork belly arrived, a glistening masterpiece of crackling skin and tender, juicy meat. Each bite was a symphony of savory-sweet notes, the beer marinade adding a unique depth that reminded me of the beloved Filipino lechon kawali. The Halloumi, a vegetarian alternative, was no afterthought. Thick slices, grilled to a perfect golden char, offered a delightful textural contrast and a surprising burst of salty goodness.

No churrasco experience is complete without sides, and Kikas Kitchen doesn’t disappoint. We dove into Mandioca Frita (crispy cassava fries), their golden crunch perfectly complementing the rich Flavors of the meats. The Maionese de Batata (potato salad) offered a creamy, tangy counterpoint, while the Arroz Branco (white rice) provided a comforting base for the symphony of Flavors.

But the true star of the show was the sauce. We opted for the Kika’s Sauce, a fiery concoction that danced on the edge of heat without scorching the palate, and the Creamy Mushroom Sauce, a velvety dream that had me wanting to lick the plate clean.

While the churrasco stole the show, the Feijoada (NZ$28.50) deserves its own standing ovation. This hearty black bean stew, bursting with pork ribs, chorizo, beef, and bacon, was a carnivore’s dream come true. Each spoonful was a warm embrace, the Flavors reminiscent of a Filipino munggo stew with a distinctly Brazilian twist. Every element, from the perfectly cooked pork crackling to the vibrant orange slices and flavourful farofa, sang in perfect harmony.

The meal was an explosion of flavour, a testament to the passion and skill of the chefs at Kikas Kitchen. But beyond the food, it was the service that truly stole our hearts. The staff, with their genuine smiles and infectious enthusiasm, made us feel like we were guests in their home, not just patrons in a restaurant.

If you’re looking for an escape from the ordinary, a taste of something truly special, Kikas Kitchen is a must-visit. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a gateway to Brazil, a celebration of flavour, and a place where you’ll leave with a heart full of warmth and a stomach full of deliciousness.
