Cafe Hanoi (Auckland CBD, New Zealand)

Vibrant Vietnamese in Britomart! Cafe Hanoi’s melt-in-your-mouth pork belly, flavourful veggie curries & fresh rolls are a delicious escape. Worth the splurge!  Craving some Hanoi heat? Cafe Hanoi’s spicy curry & melt-in-your-mouth pork belly satisfied my soul This hidden gem in Britomart is worth the hunt! #VietFoodGoals #AucklandEats

Nestled away in the bustling Britomart, Cafe Hanoi isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a portal to vibrant Vietnam. From the moment you step inside, the intoxicating aroma of lemongrass and chilies dances with the chatter of excited diners, drawing you into a world of culinary magic.

My recent venture into this modern Vietnamese treasure trove left me with a symphony of flavours still echoing in my memory. We started with the Fresh Rice Paper Rolls (NZ$21.00), a symphony of textures and tastes wrapped in translucent rice sheets. Every bite was a delightful explosion of juicy pork belly, crunchy shrimp, and springy noodles, all harmonizing beautifully with the fragrant Nuoc Cham dipping sauce.

Then came the star of the show: the Pork Belly (NZ$38.00) braised in coconut water. Oh, this wasn’t your average pork belly. Imagine melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, infused with the subtle sweetness of coconut and the tangy zing of pickled mustard greens. Every morsel was a testament to the chef’s mastery, a poem of flavour etched onto my taste buds.

For those seeking a lighter melody, the Aromatic Curry (NZ$29.00) offered a vibrant counterpoint. Don’t let the lack of meat fool you; this vegetarian dish was a flavour bomb! Crunchy tofu puffs, creamy coconut milk, and the refreshing spark of Markut lime and Thai basil painted a vibrant picture on my palate, highlighting the depth and complexity of Vietnamese vegetarian cuisine.

And lest we forget the liquid accompaniment, our Far Eastern Pilsner (NZ$12.00) and Morningcider Cider (NZ$12.00) perfectly complemented the food’s symphony. The pilsner’s crisp bitterness cut through the richness of the pork belly, while the cider’s honeyed sweetness balanced the curry’s spiciness.

Sure, Cafe Hanoi might be a touch pricier than its casual counterparts, but the experience goes beyond mere sustenance. It’s a celebration of Vietnamese culture, a feast for the senses, and a story told through masterful cooking. From the open kitchen where you can witness the culinary alchemy firsthand to the attentive service and chic ambiance, every detail orchestrates a memorable dining experience.

Cafe Hanoi is more than just a restaurant; it’s a journey for your taste buds, a vibrant melody of flavours that will leave you wanting more. So, if you’re seeking a taste of the exotic in the heart of Auckland, follow your nose (and this review) to Cafe Hanoi – you won’t be disappointed.

  • Inviting dishes so expertly pictured . . . where is my genie and my pocketbook . . . and, being of the generation I am, the name does bring forth whispers from old Indo-China . . .
