Jongno Cafe Salon – 종로카페살롱 (Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea)

Jongno Cafe Salon (종로카페살롱) epitomizes the ideal setting for a tea party. Its charming vintage interior, adorned with floral-patterned wallpaper throughout, creates a cozy high-tea ambiance. Located near Gyeongbukgung Palace, this cafe distinguishes itself from neighbouring Hanbok rental shops. Jong-ro Cafe is not only a cafe but also a rental shop for 1920s-styled costumes, offering customers the opportunity to have a photoshoot in the shop above.

Jong-ro Cafe specializes in drinks and desserts, all of which can be ordered from a kiosk. English options are available, making ordering a breeze. We ended up choosing an Iced Latte, Peach Citrus Tea, and Injeolmi Bingsu.

One unique aspect for us was that if you opted for takeaway instead of dining in, you couldn’t stay in the shop to enjoy your order, even if you changed your mind after ordering. This contrasts with New Zealand, where even with a take-away order, you can typically stay inside the shop. Nonetheless, it makes sense, as that’s the essence of “take-away.”

The Iced Latte was fairly standard to me, nothing particularly remarkable. It struck a good balance, not overly sweet or bitter. The Peach Citrus tea didn’t have the refreshing or sourness I anticipated. Personally, it tasted more like carbonated soda than peach, which wasn’t to my liking. On the other hand, the Injeolmi Bingsu featured almonds, mochi, shaved milk, and a sweetened condensed milk topping. It was simple yet satisfying, with the Injeolmi offering a mild peanut buttery flavour and the frozen shaved milk not being overwhelming. It had just the right level of sweetness and was a reasonable portion for sharing with two others.

Jong-ro Cafe offers a wonderful experience, suitable not only for friends and couples but also for families. During our visit, we observed large family groups coming in to enjoy Bingsu, which, based on the number of people ordering the same dessert as us, seemed to be their top-selling item.
