Mad Pot (Albany, North Shore City, New Zealand)
Exploring new eating spots is always an exciting endeavour, especially when they turn out to be hidden gems like Mad Pot, or as the locals fondly refer to it, Yang Guo Fu. Our team’s North Shore office days are a bit of a treat – not just for the change in scenery but for the culinary adventure that awaits during lunchtime. Situated near the bustling Corinthian Drive, often dubbed North Shore’s own unofficial ‘China Town’, Mad Pot has become our go-to spot for satisfying our spicy cravings.
Let’s just clarify – it’s not just a regular pot, it’s a MAD POT. A name that holds true to the fiery, flavour-packed experience that awaits. As frequent visitors, we’ve come to understand the intricacies of this spot. With the plethora of ingredients available, from succulent meats to an array of balls (yes, you read that right), the choices are as diverse as they are exciting. Though, I’ll admit, the quality of the meats can be a tad inconsistent, but it’s never been bad.
Speaking of choices, portion control is an art we’re all striving to master. You see, Mad Pot can be on the pricier side compared to other places, especially if you, like me, tend to go overboard with your selections as they weigh what you order. A tip from a colleague has proved valuable – her bill typically stays in the low NZ$20.00 range, which I can only applaud her for.
Personal preferences play a big role in my choices hence I usually pay around NZ$30.00. Dense and hearty ingredients like an assortment of fish balls, tendons, noodles, rehydrated shiitakes, meats, and the ever-adorable quail eggs always make their way onto my plate. Now, it’s decision time – tang (soup) or xiang guo (dry)? For those who, like me, enjoy a bit of kick but aren’t fire-breathing dragons, the medium spice level is the sweet spot. Beware though, ‘medium’ here sometimes comes with a fiery punch.
The beauty of this place is in its simplicity. Choose your ingredients, opt for a not-so-spicy, mild, or full-on spicy broth, and indulge in a hotpot or dried fried noodle delight. Condiments abound, elevating your culinary adventure to a whole new level.
The soups here are nothing short of delectable. Bursting with flavours and richness, they serve as the perfect canvas for the symphony of ingredients that’s about to unfold in your bowl.
Each visit to Mad Pot is a joyful experience, a spicy rendezvous that leaves our taste buds dancing. With just two options on the menu, Mad Pot knows how to excel in the art of Mala stew and stir-fry. If you’re craving a sizzling, tongue-tingling feast, this is undoubtedly the place to be. Just a word of caution – the lingering aroma of spices might cling to you, a souvenir of your delectable journey.
