Chinese Cuisine (Epsom, Auckland, New Zealand)
Nestled in the heart of Epsom, Auckland, the unassumingly named “Chinese Cuisine” is a testament to generations of culinary expertise. Transitioning from its legendary stall in Mercury Lane K’rd to its current home over a year ago, this restaurant radiates a familiar warmth that’s hard to forget.
A Taste of Tradition: From the moment you step in, the ambiance resonates with Cantonese authenticity. The simplicity speaks volumes as their flavours take centre stage.
Legacy of Flavors: Their dishes, rooted in traditional Cantonese cooking, mirror the essence of old-school delights. What’s truly remarkable is their commitment and camaraderie, evident in every bite.
Curiosity led us here, fuelled by recommendations and social media buzz. A brief wait ensued, a testament to their growing popularity.
We delved into a Roast Mixed Plate featuring Crispy Chicken and Roast Pork (NZ$28.00), and their acclaimed Chef’s Special Fried Rice (NZ$19.00). However, the fried rice left us wanting, scarce in protein and subtlety.
The Roast Pork was an exquisite fusion of crispy skin and succulent meat. The chicken, reminiscent of the beloved Max Fried Chicken in the Philippines, carried a hint of nostalgia. Prepared in a similar fashion—twice cooked, boiled or steamed, then fried—the lady’s hands worked magic before my eyes. The chicken, initially chilled from the fridge, was microwaved to restore inner warmth before it was deep-fried.
However, the pork leaned towards the salty side, prompting us to drink more water a bit more frequently. The sensation suggested that the salt used during the cooking process might have seeped into the meat, rendering it saltier than our preferred taste.
While pricing was reasonable, some claims of spectacularity elude reality. The food stood solid, akin to many other Chinese takeaways. Not exceptional, but undeniably satisfying.
In this modern age, where culinary trends rise and fall, “Chinese Cuisine” preserves a connection to our roots. It’s more than just a meal; it’s a journey back in time, an experience, a taste of nostalgia.

That plate of roasted chicken and pork looks pretty decent!
I find the prices shocking even without converting to our miserable ringgit. NZD19 for a plate of fried rice, eg. Multiplying that by 3 will give me a heart attack!
I know, prices now are getting crazier
