Gorilla Burger Wellington Airport (Wellington, New Zealand)

As the bustling Wellington Airport buzzed with travellers, I found myself drawn to an unexpected gem – Gorilla Burger. Amidst the whirlwind of departures and arrivals, the promise of a unique burger experience beckoned.

Caught in the midst of the Burger on a Plate festival, I lamented my brief stay in Wellington. With only a couple of days to spare, the array of tempting burger creations seemed endless. Colleagues regaled tales of devouring multiple entries a day, while my own journey led me to Rosie’s Red-Hot Cantina & Taco Joint and, most recently, Gorilla Burger.

Gorilla Burger greeted me with a promise of something different. Ordering was a breeze, and the efficient service was tailored for the airport hustle.

My last moments in Wellington demanded a final, savory hurrah. With scepticism fuelled by previous airport fare, I approached Gorilla Burger’s Southern Supper (NZ$21.00). A burger with chicken fried steak, southern-style green beans, and white pepper gravy nestled in a vegan brioche bun – a concoction that raised eyebrows and expectations.

The first bite shattered my reservations. The crunch of the chicken fried steak’s outer layer, encasing tender, succulent beef, painted an unexpectedly delightful picture. The green beans, an enigma on paper, added a pop of colour and texture that surprisingly harmonized with the ensemble. But it was the white pepper gravy that stole the show, infusing every mouthful with a delectable richness.

Curiosities arose – why the fusion of Southern-Style green beans and a vegan brioche bun with meaty components? Yet, as I savoured each bite, the unconventional union worked. This wasn’t just a burger; it was an experiment in flavour and innovation, masterfully executed.

Amidst the burger marvel, I did note the absence of fries. However, the flavour-packed creation didn’t beg for more. The experience was perfectly complemented by sips of Coke, a refreshing contrast to the indulgent flavours.

As my flight beckoned, I left Gorilla Burger Airport with a sense of contentment and surprise. The burger had defied expectations and added a memorable note to my Wellington journey. It’s a testament to the culinary magic that can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

In the transient world of airports, Gorilla Burger proved that even amid travel chaos, exceptional flavours can emerge, creating moments of culinary delight in unexpected corners.

What a surprising find! The combination is certainly unusual, the names are funny, and the execution is actually great? Kudos to them for making it work!

  4. Holy cow! As my family will attest, I always get distracted by the promise of a good burger…and Gorilla Burger looks AMAZING. What a cool concept to put chicken fried steak on a burger with white sauce and green beans. I can definitely say this is the first time I’ve seen beans on a burger…but I’m all in. I just wish they had Gorilla Burger here!
