Ajisen Ramen (Takapuna, North Shore City, New Zealand)
As avid ramen enthusiasts, we are constantly on the lookout for new and exciting ramen spots in Auckland. Our latest discovery took us to Ajisen Ramen in Takapuna, a hidden gem previously known as Mamak, a Malaysian restaurant we used to frequent. This cozy eatery specializes in tonkotsu pork bone broth and offers a wide variety of noodle dishes to tantalize your taste buds. Join us on a culinary adventure as we delve into the flavours and experiences at Ajisen Ramen.
Ajisen Ramen is renowned for its Kumamoto-style broth, featuring a rich tonkotsu base infused with Shigemitsu’s roast garlic and onion flavouring, also known as “the secret recipe.” The broth is a harmonious blend of flavours, accompanied by succulent chashu pork, a perfectly cooked egg, and delightful kikurage mushrooms. The menu boasts an array of broth options, including soy, miso, spicy sesame-based, and even a soup-less dry ramen topped with minced pork, chashu, and onion oil.
Located beneath the Sentinel Apartment, Ajisen Ramen offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere, we loved the decor specially those overhead power lines on wooden poles . The service is quick and friendly, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. While the prices may lean towards the higher end, the quality of the food justifies the cost.
What sets Ajisen Ramen apart is its convenient ordering system. Like Mr Hao or Lucky 8, you can place your order by scanning a QR code on your phone, providing a hassle-free and efficient way to enjoy your meal.
We highly recommend indulging in their signature dish, the Ajisen Ramen (NZ$19.00), this Kumamoto-style pork-based ramen is a delightful symphony of flavours, reminiscent of the ramen we enjoyed in Japan.
For those who crave heat, the Spicy Ajisen Ramen (NZ$23.00) delivers a fiery kick with its spicy tonkotsu broth, balanced perfectly with other toppings.
But if you’re seeking for more meat than heat, the Grand Zen Nose (NZ$29.00) is a must-try. This bowl of goodness features Kumamoto broth topped with tamago, chashu, slow-braised soft ribs, scallions, and kikurage. The firm and bouncy noodles paired with the rich, creamy broth create a truly satisfying combination.
To complement your ramen, don’t miss out on the Agedashi Tofu (NZ$12.00). The golden-brown silken tofu paired with the flavourful tsuyu broth is a delightful appetizer.
For a refreshing beverage, we recommend trying the Lychee Ramune (NZ$6.00), a Japanese original carbonated lemonade that perfectly complements the flavours of the ramen.
Our experience at Ajisen Ramen in Takapuna was nothing short of delightful. From the robust flavours of the ramen to the convenience of the ordering process, it truly captured our hearts. Whether you’re a ramen aficionado or simply curious to explore new flavours, Ajisen Ramen is a must-visit destination for exquisite Japanese cuisine in Auckland. Plan your visit and get ready to indulge in a bowl of pure culinary bliss.

I’m not really into Japanese ramen because I prefer noodles in clear soup.
